Anthony's Asylum
Greetings my fellow indy wrestling fans and welcome to Anthony's Asylum,"
the only column which treats indy wrestling and wrestlers like A-list
Hollywood actors!
In this edition I will be discussing: " The ECW Reunion Show"
Everytime I hear those "ECW, ECW, ECW!" chants I cannot help
but be overtaken by a profound feeling of nostalgia. ECW was without a
doubt the single indy promotion to actually revolutionize the landscape
of professional wrestling. This product offered smash-mouth, no-non-sense,
WRESTLING!!! Most importantly, this product was the first of its kind
to not insult the intelligence of the fans. For example, in ECW there
were no garbage men, clowns, and other silly disguised gimmicks to portray
so-called wrestlers. In ECW the fans were introduced to real hard-working
"wrestlers" that were otherwise overlooked in the big leagues
just because they weren't silly enough to fit in "other peoples plans."
Getting back to the subject at hand, the ECW reunion show is set to take
place sometime next month at the Hammerstein Ballroom: a place which became
ECW's largest venue to perform. I vividly remember when ECW aired their
first show from that building; it was a historic night which saw ECW's
very first tag team championship tournament. That night I felt the high
lockeroom morale just by the excellent performance that each wrestler
portrayed that night. That night was so important that I remember it seeing
an article of it in the Daily News. You knew that it was a big deal if
the newspapers decided to cover that story I mean, when was the last time
pro wrestling was covered by the newspaper?
Fans, I hope this reuinion show delivers and doesn't just become a show
aimed for the sake of nostalgia thus the booking consist of tired over-worked
former ECW wrestlers that are just being used on the show to fill the
card. The ideal way to make this reunion show mean something is to have
the young talent that ECW was trying to build but couldn't due to company
closing. Talent the likes of Julio Dinero, Christian York, Nova, RoadKill,
Simon Diamond, Chris Chetti, etc. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind
seeing the older guys that helped build ECW I just don't believe that
the show should be based soley on them since I am a believer of the philosophy:
"The name wrestlers make the show, but the young guys steal the show."
