Anthony's Asylum

Greetings my fellow indy wrestling fans and welcome to "Anthony's Asylum," the only column which treats indy wrestling and wrestlers like A-list Hollywood actors!

On this weeks edition of Anthony's Asylum I will be discussing a topic which I can't help but to mention: "The Unpredictable World of Professional Wrestling."

The setting, late summer of 2002 the day I met indy superstar, Fred "Bone-Crusher" Sampson at an ECPW event. Although he was not booked to wrestle, Fred was backstage to basically view the ECPW product since he was still relatively fresh in the business. Here I was talking to Fred, practically interviewing him without even knowing it. I asked him typical questions such as where did he train (mind you at the time I was still researching wrestling schools for me to enroll) and the comparisons of schools out there. The minute I saw him I instantly knew he'd obtain a promising degree of success in the business for he displayed the "look" needed to get your foot in the door so to speak.

At the time, he was only a few months in training and already seemed ready to take his act on the road. I remember him telling me how he liked playing "face" as opposed to "heel" because as we all know, the "heel" is practically the director of a match. I bet he doesn't feel the same way anymore after making numerous national television appearances on TV.

I'm just blown away by how unpredictable the wrestling business can be! Here you are, talking to an indy wrestler who's still in the training aspect of his/her career one day and a few months to a year later, they're making surprise TV appearances. I guess the best way to sum this up is by saying that in this business you're usually a scout or phone call away from your next important gig.

Of course, the same can be said for a top superstar who is in the big leagues and suddenly is released. That certainly kills an individual's morale when they're so accustomed to performing in front of 20 thousand people to being reduced to perform in front of a crowd that you can literally split an entire pizza pie with. (insert "ooohhh" here [x] ) I'd like to end this column on a positive note; whether or not you like the unpredictability of the wrestling business it's just something you have to accept and sometimes use it as either a learning experience.

That wraps up this edition of Anthony's Asylum till next time!
