Anthony's Asylum

Greetings fellow indy wrestling fans and welcome to "Anthony's Asylum," the only column which treats indy wrestling and wrestlers like A-list Hollywood actors!

In this edition I will be discussing wrestling's second-class citizens: CRUISERWEIGHT Wrestlers! I for one am a big fan of cruiserweight wrestlers for they are the bloodlife of modern-day wrestling culture. I remember growing up and being captivated by the undeniable strong work-ethic that these cruiserweights would display in their matches. I would constantly wonder to myself: "Why aren't these guys (the cruiserweights) ever given the spolight that they deserve?" My question was finally answered when I stumbled across Mexican wrestling, a.k.a Lucha Libre. For the first time, I was introduced to an un-biased style of wrestling in which honored the beauty of strong work-ethic and acrobatics. This style of wrestling easily seperated the "can" and the "cannot's." Who for example can forget Mexico's "Hulk Hogan," Konnan, for his track record of arena sell-outs speaks volumes of words.

I recently attended New Millennium Wrestling's debut event and the one match that gave me a lasting impression that night was yes, you guessed it, a cruiserweight match between Abunai VS Wicked. A solid cruiserweight match indeed, as both athletes brought the best out of one another. Traditionally, when the crowd's reaction to your match is "oooh," "aaah," that's when you know you struck an intriguing cord with the fans. Getting back to the subject at hand, this match showcased numerous of devestating high-flying action; the kind of action that a cruiserweight enthusiasts like myself, would crave.

I know that many casual wrestling fans probably still question the drawing ability of cruiserweight wrestlers, but I truly feel that cruiserweight wrestlers have a lot to offer in terms of performing crowd-motivating matches. Look at a cruiserweight like AJ Styles, the man reeks charisma, has the drawing power of a boy-group band. (of course dating back to when they were popular) More importantly, he has the work-ethic of a horse often innovating the art of crusierweight wrestling. In closing, a name wrestler could "make" the show, but a cruiserweight "steals" the show!

That wraps up this edition of "Anthony's Asylum" join me next time as I look foward to writing another column for the fellow indy fans out there.
