Ten Questions With . . .

April Hunter

She is one of the most popular, and talked about, women on the indy scene today. Having wrestled for nearly every major and minor promotion in the US, UK and in Japan, she has made a great name for herself. She returns to do our 10 Questions one more time, since the webmaster somehow lost her old one. She is the amazing April Hunter.

1. What made you decide to go from being a fitness model to getting into professional wrestling?

Believe it or not, I got out of fitness modeling because I hated the politics. Ha! Little did I know I was jumping into something much worse. BUT, I do love being in the ring. And that’s why I did it---I wanted to see if all those years in the gym actually added up to anything athletic. I'm a big fan of submission/mat wrestling and Pride/UFC style fighting. My dad was a wrestler, and showed me a lot...I think he not-so-secretly wished I'd been a boy!

2. What promotions have you worked for?

Have tights, will travel. Jersey All Pro, WXW, NWA TNA, WCW (before it was taken over), ECWA, Irish Whip Wrestling, All Star UK, Neo Japan, UWF, Liberty All Star, MCW, MWF up here in Ma, PWA in CT, UPW in Cali and a bunch more I know I'm forgetting because it's late and I'm wiped out.

3. What has been the most embarrassing moment of your wrestling career?

Well, I’ve tripped and fallen loads of times, usually on my ring entrance…attempted a nip up and didn’t make it in a stand off…ran up the turnbuckle to the top and missed…then tried it once more and MISSED again…had a really crap match on national TV for NWA TNA which the guys at my school have never let me forget…when I first started, I became infamous for missing trip spots…see? Too many to list!

4. As a women in a predominately male sport, are you ever treated differently by other wrestlers or promoters?

Yep, but I expected that. The guys will be cool if you’re willing to get out there and take the bumps and beatings. If you’re trying to get by on your looks or act like a rat in their dressing room (and it is their dressing room), chances are, they won’t really respect you. Most tend to think that women just shouldn’t be taking up time in the ring that could be allotted to males, who have been training longer and harder. I can’t really blame them for that, though. I’ve been lucky; most promoters & bookers have treated me well. A few here and there have tried to treat me like a “typical female”, but it takes time to prove yourself.

5. How did you and Slyk Wagner Brown get paired up? What's it like traveling on the road with him and his inability to distinguish Guns N Roses from Barry Manilow?

I’ve been working with Slyk since my very first independent show. Walter Kowalski paired us up and it worked, so we kept the team going. With the exception of his occasional road rages when we get lost and preference for exceedingly bad rap music at times, he pretty much rocks and is the best partner I could ask for. He looks out for me, is good company and helps me get better with each show. Plus, he’s always willing to do the first half of the driving, which lets me sleep a little later since I can then do my makeup in the visor mirror on the way.

I’m still working with him on the music thing, but between you and me, I think it’s a lost cause. However, as soon as someone remixes Guns or Barry to a rap beat, he’ll then acknowledge the differences. (PS. He’s over my shoulder yelling something about “Don’t Hate…”)

6. What do you think of the current state of women's wrestling? What do you think of the current state of wrestling in general?

Warning: I’m not a ‘political answer’ kind of person, so tell it like I think. I think women’s wrestling has gotten a whole lot better, but still isn’t where it could be. It seems a lot of girls still don’t know the basics like chain wrestling reversals or ring positioning. Wrestling in general is a bit hard to watch right now. Depending on your choices of shows it’s either too repetitive & predictable, or a spot fest where nothing seems to makes sense. I wouldn’t mind seeing more athletics, more swerves, less gimmickry, less talking... But, that’s just my opinion.

7. Who are some of the women you enjoy working with most? Are there any women you haven't had the chance to work with that you would like to?

I tagged with Trinity recently and that was fun. I worked with Alexis Laree in a 3-way and would love to work her again. I’d really like to match up with Sumie Sakai or Ayako Hamada. I also like Alura, Sweet Saraya, Adara James and Taylor Matheny. Really, I’d love to work with anyone whose main interest is to have a good match.

8. What do you feel has been the highlight of your career thus far?

You’re going to laugh, but most of the time, it’s the trip down to the shows when a lot of us travel together. I’d also have to say working in Japan, because they don’t bring many women in, and it was an amazing experience. I love traveling and Tokyo absolutely rocked!

9. You have a phenomenal website that offers a lot more than just upcoming appearances and a bio. Could you tell your fans a little bit about your
site and what's in store for them when they drop by?

Thanks! I put a LOT into it. For the past 4 years, it’s more or less grown into a monstrous nudie site. If you’re willing to fork out the $20 or so, there are over 7000 photos and dozens of video clips that range from pro wrestling to nude centerfold. And many gorgeous Playmate/Penthouse Pet girlfriends, behind-the-scenes galleries and diaries, dirty jokes, wallpapers and other downloads...It’s a man’s playground, especially if you’re a fan of wrestling and naked hotties. I love playing dress up, as I’m stuck mostly in sweats with no makeup most days. Plus my site allows me to pursue the low paying work that are the Indies which is what I need to do in order to learn and get better, so it’s win/win, ya know? (Gratuitous

10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I honestly don’t know. I’m an opportunist. I just tend to run with the ball and hope it turns into something. Have been doing that my whole life and it’s worked out ok so far.
