Ten Questions With . . .

Chris Idol

Chris Idol has been a staple on the East Coast independent wrestling scene for several years. Having worked for promotions from CWF to JAP to ROH, he has made a name for himself as a hard worker and great competitior. This summer, Chris has decided to move to CA to further hone his craft. Before leaving for the West Coast, he was kind enough to answer 10 Questions for us!

1. What made you decide to become a professional wrestler?

IDOL- I always watched wrestling, that whole story. I went to a new local fed, CWF. There shows were incredible . I was a huge mark for them . PVO was the commish there. I contacted him , told him I knew how to wrestle and all these lies. Honestly I was just a fan trying to get into the business. He thought nothing of me until I kept emailing him ideas and being annoying.

CWF opened a school in West Paterson, near IWF ironically. I went to the school w/ my older brother Dan. I was taught by Snuka Sr. and Jr as it was there school. I was taught by them , Guido, Angel of the Baldies , Crowbar, and mostly Kuvatro the flesheater .

Kuvatro taught me so much , I owe a lot to him and he is one of my best friends although we don’t talk as much . As he is always “TCBing”. Once CWF closed, I went to ECPW for a bit, JAPW a bit . I kept in touch w/ PVO and I wanted him to open his own promotion , he eventually did, IHPW My first match was July 22 , 2001 in a battle royal for CWF in which Harry Acropulus and Kuvatro killed me. I loved it .

2. You've worked all over the Northeast. What are some of your favorite promotions you have worked for and why do they stand out as favorites?
IDOL- I enjoy working anywhere. As long as I can wrestle . Besides CWF, I started in JAP in a singles match (my 1st one) against by good friend Callahan. It was a student show , I wrestled as Chris Cabbana ( I had the cabbana name 1st) . I looked like a big queer but I got over. Then I got hooked up w/ Christopher Street Connection for JAP. That was always fun .JAP has the best rats no doubt . IHPW I love . I feel I grown with it because it was there I got to establish myself as a worker . ROH is excellent and organized and easy. JCW has been great to me and Ricky O and Bob are two great men . BWO is awesome too, as I have grown there to . Richie Rotten and Magic are guys who look out for you, I am grateful for that . ECPW is always neat ,there I got to learn more technical and psychology .My 1st singles match there was w/ Harry Acropulus , he beat the living hell out of me in a squash match, it was the worst beating I have gotten but Harry is a great guy and he taught me a lot also. I love working anywhere. SSCW is fun , I worked under a mask there once , it was fun. I also teamed w/ Lazaro vs Magic and Suba. That match was killer.

3. What has been your most memorable moment, in the business, thus far?

IDOL- Working the Russ Huss memorial show for JAP. Being around and listening to “names” stories. Like Dusty Rhodes ,Corino,Inferno,Justin Credible. A Car ride W/ Gangrel was phenomenal .Luna Vachon. All those people you learn from.

BUT… The most memorial part of my very green career would have to be when I was training at CWF. 2weeks there, I still could not get the back bump down . Falling on my ass,hip etc… So much pain . Untill The Superfly came to the school . He said to me the most “lovely words “ and I will never forget it . He said “Brudda, what you when you do Da bump, you gonna slap out and you will know, it’s beautiful “ . As soon as he said that, I nailed the bump perfectly and became use to it . Thanks to the superfly.

4. Who have been your favorite people to step into the ring with or against?

IDOL-Mike Flease . We never get along before our match . We are like brothers though .We kill each other to . Training with Homicide is always a learning experience. My matches with Callahan earlier in my career were always fun . Callahan is underrated and utilized incorrectly . Lazaro and I always have had fun . Lethal too .

5. What has been your most embarassing moment in the sport?

IDOL- When I was in JAPW in Bayonne . I was with the CSC group . One night I came out in a hoola skirt with just boxers under it . The rats in bayonne loved me, so much that they ripped my hoola skirt off . I was stuck in my boxers for the rest of our time out there. It was kind of hot though . It paid off later as a rat flashed me outside just to talk to me. That is dedication.

6. What wrestlers do you enjoy watching in action and why?

IDOL-William Regal is my favorite. I watch matches, to learn . I also enjoy watching Reckless Youth and Homicide. They're just incredible when it comes to psychology.

7. What would you tell a kid looking to get into wrestling?

IDOL- Look out for number one only . Don’t try to help others because they might not help you . Stay Humble. Drop your ego at the door. Some woman in wrestling have not learned that yet though. But they were never trained so…

8. What do you think of the current state of professional wrestling?

IDOL- I feel it is fine . I am more of a watcher of Japan wrestling . US wrestling is fine though . I watched that HBO special on wrestling deaths . It was scary how true Piper seemed. Who knows though , Hopefully it stays well , because it’s my whole life. I gave up everything just to learn and wrestle.

9. You are soon moving to CA to train at UPW. How did this opportunity come up? What made you decide to move across country just to train? What are you looking most forward to?

IDOL- PVO was on vacation in California with his Girl friend and her family . He e-mailed me saying how much he liked it there. Jokingly I said stay, fuck IHPW just as long as you're happy . Next day he e-mailed me saying a company was interested in IHPW product. Then he tells me that he was offered a job down there that he could not pass up . So I said stay there . I would have. It’s a great opportunity .

So he then said he was moving there and IHPW would be with a company called Brain Buster Ent. I was happy for him .

So now here I am in NJ , I feel I can learn much more when it comes to wrestling styles and such . I talked to Jesse Hernandez out in CA and got in touch w/ UPW about prices and styles they teach . So being that I am doing nothing now really in NJ and I am only 18, I said “shit maybe PVO has room for when he moves , I can drive down with him or something.”

I got in touch w/ PVO and he said he has room . So I’m going to CA baby .

I love learning more styles and such . I am now interested in Lucha and Japan styles. Mr. Hernandez teaches that in CA . So hopefully my trip out there will be worth it . I will be out there for a good while, and if I like it , I will live there . I am mostly looking forward to learning. Also the Cali Indys, what there like and the differences from NJ . I can not wait to leave NJ . I want to train everywhere, Cali, Florida, Japan ,Mexico . Anywhere I can . This opportunity is breath taking to me.

10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

IDOL- Dead
