It saddens me to see that the wrestling business is no different overseas
than it is hear. Full of scum and promoters who just want to pass the
blame. Peter, I'm behind you 100%! - Brett
And welcome ladies and gentlemen (all three of you, right
Bobby?), to the latest installment of my column - where cynicism is taken
as natural; and there's a sense of egotism far beyond vanity. But hey,
you love me for it.....
Let's start off with NWATNA. After my last column, I guess Monty Brown's
heel turn needs to be mentioned. I didn't see that coming, but then again
I don't analyze like I used to. It's hard to second guess most wrestling
bookers these days, because they make decisions so last minute and rushed
or on a whim; that it makes it pointless to try. Just speculate a little,
go with the flow and speak your mind; then comment on what happens - works
for me, anyway. Aside from that, will Monty Brown get over as a heel?
To me.....maybe, and maybe not. The TNA fans (and most of professional
wrestling itself) are so desperate to see Jeff Jarrett drop the title
to someone (animal, mineral, or even extra terrestrial would do), that
I don't think that many people will care about Monty's heel turn to the
extent that they might have had this been done at a different time. And
that's a shame, as the situation does have potential.
Breaking news I must throw in right now, is Shannon Moore's involvement
recently in a car accident. As a longterm fan of his, I wish him all the
best and hope he is back soon. Apparently, it's quite scary how lucky
he was (and how it could have easily have been Matt Hardy, and that it
would have been worse due to Matt's choice of car). Thankfully, both guys
(and wrestling itself) were very lucky on this occasion, and were spared
tragedy.
" I don't have a lot of backstage problems or anything like that".....
who recently made this quote during an interview? Ironically, Edge. Insert
your own cheap shot here, because it's entirely justifiable.
On a final WWE note, WrestleMania is just round the corner. And it breaks
my wrestling heart to say I barely care compared to how I used to feel.
WWE has been on a little roll of late mind you, with Jake Roberts and
Marty Jannetty being of note and approval. Now, me; I was thrilled to
see the both of them back and around on the big screen again. There's
still very much a place for those two, and many past workers like them
in wrestling today - I have always said this. But, with absolutely zero
disrespect intended (as you can tell); when they're the best thing to
hit the WWE's television shows in months - what does that tell you about
today's scene, bar it stinks worse than a Mr Socko you thought you'd lost
for months? They should have been a feel good flashback to the past for
most of us, and with all good meant - not the best part of the show. Still,
it must be real fine to be Marty Jannetty right now; and well done to
him for where he is again.
The Wrestling Channel here in the UK had it's big show in Coventry at
the weekend. I'm very reliably told most of it was decent action and good
performances, but sadly the fans as ever left a lot to be desired. What
a close friend of mine described as "98 percent 'smart' fans, and
85 percent smart asses", was probably an understatement on the latter
part of that description. Example being, the apparent reaction to the
World Of Sport legends match, where two UK legends squared up for a one
off match; and all the young and supposedly knowledgeable audience could
come up with was disrespectful comments and chants. Ever heard of respect
for the old school? Oh, of course not - that's not fashionable to this
kind of fan in the UK, and if you are one of these; then it won't get
you over with your similarly moronic friends.
Mind you, I guess it would have helped if most of the show wasn't booked
for the benefits and to the approval of a certain 'UK fan forum' message
board that I've voiced my disgust about in the past here in England. Then
you might have got an audience with a brain cell and a love of wrestling
between them, instead of competing conversations and chants of who can
sound the most 'in' the wrestling business; when they're actually NOT
and never will be.
On a positive note, congratulations to my buddy in Philly, Kris Krude;
for recently joining up with 3PW - a well deserved break for a really
good guy.
Aside from that, to finish up; my apologies for taking my time with a
new column - a BIG project is afoot in my world, and you WILL know about
it when it happens and is announced. That's all I'm saying! Till next
time, remember - hating me won't make you talented.
