Well, it's been a little while, so your 'Internet Icon' thought
he'd check in with another column and session of giving my thoughts and
putting over what's near and dear to my heart. My journalistic integrity
went a long time ago, as you'd all probably guessed! Mind you, at least
I did have some in the first place....
Not that too many others seem to have it anymore, actual decent people
around this business who write something worth reading are getting sadly
less and less. Personally, I can count the people who's writings I read
on about one hand now; and nearly all of those are people who's website
I write for....
I suppose it doesn't help that wrestling itself isn't in the best of health
these days in my view. In the US right now, WWE isn't really worth mentioning,
for one. TNA are doing their best on a lot of levels, and then seem to
take about two steps back by bringing in a Scott Steiner which is a waste
of money and all concerned. The CZW/RoH angle is probably, to me, the
hottest thing going right now; and if continually booked right will be
for the rest of the year. After that, what's to talk about?
I get all soppy and emotional when quizzed on all things 'old school'.
I feel sorry for newer fans, they won't have anything decent to reminisce
over in a couple to a few years time. Sure, things always always look
better when you look back with rose tinted glasses and think 'oh, how
it used to be'; but I know I have a lot better memories to look back on
than anyone who will ever look back at today's scene.
Ironically, it comes at a time when I'm more involved at a ground level
of being on shows than ever before. I'm the owner of ACW here in the UK,
and the actual performing on shows has been an amazing amount of fun.
I'm blessed, I don't have to act out of character, and I barely have to
turn the volume up; in fact it's been said more than a few times that
I live my gimmick. I have news for those people who say that, it's no
gimmick, this is how I am!
Although, the UK is in a right mess right now. I won't be drawn to say
too much negative on 1PW, in fact I probably think it's best I don't say
anything at all there as it's bound to be misconstrued somewhere along
the line due to my six months aboard of helping Steven Gauntley start
the promotion. (Tactful? Me? Well,....) We speak again now, and whilst
I don't imagine it would be a big deal to either of us if we fell out
again, it would achieve nothing and I think both of us live a little happier
for at least being on speaking terms.
The FWA is on a bit of a down spell, and I'm actually hoping they pick
up and the scene sharpens up and has some real competition to it. All-Star
still run most all over the country, and whilst I swear they just put
a pin in a map (and end up promoting places they shouldnt, i.e on other
promotion's doorsteps), and the concept ofwrestlers actually appearing
who are advertised seems beyond All-Star; they still have an audience
and a respectable show.
I'll get abuse at this point and reminded there are plenty of other UK
promotions. None of them are about to be taking on the world though, the
general is that most run a decent enough show but aren't about to be breaking
out and making a dash for the finish line though. Not that that's entirely
a bad thing, it means they'll at least last the race; but it also means
it's not entirely justifiable to mention them in the same name as the
'big three' in the UK. My good friends at UCW, and also promotions such
as WZW, FCW, WAW and one or two others; put on a decent show though.
There is a trend in the UK of promoters that are barely worth mentioning,
who either don't have the knowledge or the money, or have too much money
and a whole bundle of arrogance and smarmy attitude to go with it; but
I said they're barely worth mentioning and I figure I'll upset them more
by NOT naming them. So I'm not going to!
And then there's my home now, ACW. We're getting a solid consistent audience
figure each show, our shows are being taped for dvd release, and I feel
we're taking some good steps and regularly moving on well. Our newest
DVD, 'ACW Hell To Pay' is available to buy from the website, www.acwrestling.co.uk;
and I'd recommend it to any of you with a spare £10 and Paypal!
We're setting up towards our own 'WrestleMania' of sorts, which is going
to be a huge weekend in April for yours truly. It's a hometown ACW show
in Luton, on April 8th; and my beloved soccer team play the hated rivals
of Watford on April 9th - so I'll settle for a sell out crowd on the 8th,
and a victory for my boys on April 9th!
Till next time, thanks for reading, and visit my website www.freewebs.com/theinterneticon
for all that I'm doing, and concerning my involvement with ACW; and remember
that 'If you're not me, then you suck!'.
