It saddens me to see that the wrestling business is no different overseas
than it is hear. Full of scum and promoters who just want to pass the
blame. Peter, I'm behind you 100%! - Brett
My last column of the year. Sounds momentous in a way, but
the truth is I'm closing up shop early for Christmas this year so as to
spend more time with the kids. But there's still a couple of things I
wanted to speak about before I finished for Xmas and New Year, so sit
back and get comfy as old yours truly speaks his mind on whatever comes
to mind. I'm thinking of renaming myself Petey though.... seeing as since
Petey Williams is so popular, people have chosen to call me Petey now!
Luckily I'm a big fan of the man himself, so it could be far far worse!
So, with it being Xmas and the season of goodwill; it's time to shout
out and give much love and props to some of my friends who have been doing
well and hitting the headlines recently. So, much congratulations must
go out to the guys at TNA for a really good 'Turning Point' pay per view.
Especially to my friend Chris Harris, his partner James Storm; and Christopher
Daniels and Elix Skipper.
In CZW, at Cage of Death 6; a welcome return for my very gifted buddy
Nick Berk who is criminally underrated and one of the best wrestlers around
on the indy's. CZW deserve a lot of credit for what sounded a hot COD6
show, and as someone who's always stood by them and defended them and
interviewed the boys etc - it's great to see them draw such a big crowd.
Also, a hot match involving my boys Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw must be
mentioned also. Me and Mike go way back, Chikara is a great promotion,
their 6 man tag matches just so totally rule; and 'Quacky' and Jigsaw
are two of the most talented workers in the game.
A little shout to my friend Shawn Daivari who's now on Raw is needed also.
Finally, the WWE give a chance on the 'big screen' to a younger talent
who isn't too green to be there. Daivari is a good wrestler, and here's
hoping my boy does well. It's nice to say something decent about the WWE
for once..... even if I DO question the reasoning behind the gimmick.
On the other side of the coin, something you can't say good about the
WWE for; is Vince McMahon's apparent wishes to make the female side of
the business contain more models and looks, over talent and ability. Wrestlers
such as Victoria (who I know for a fact a good few MALE wrestlers like
to watch and pick up/steal tricks from), and Molly Holly have finally
made the women's division less of an excuse to go and grab a cold beer
and more of a reason to sit and watch and enjoy - and yet Vince wants
to as ever take the cheap option. It won't bring in the 'younger male'
viewers he thinks it will, because if these viewers want to see barely
clothed women - they'll go where they can see them not at all clothed,
if you catch my drift. It's pointless, it teases something Vince can't
deliver; and it cheapens women's wrestling and must seriously frustrate
(and justifably so) any female wrestler who has put hard work and dedication
into learning the craft just to be passed over for someone who in McMahon's
mind 'looks good'.
Anyways, grumble over; because it's Xmas, baby! I also want to thank all
the people who have been there for me this year. So, in no particular
order; my thanks go out to the following for being there as friends or
when I needed them (if I forgot you, it IS 8am as I write this, and sorry)
- Jimmie Hughes (the greatest webmaster a daft Brit like me could ever
wish for), Shaka (Philly's finest not that well known indy worker, I tells
ya!), Mark Wolf, American Kickboxer, Zack McGuire, Mike Quackenbush, Rocco
(my 'kid bro' who's the next big thing in the UK!), Crazy Shea, Joey Image,
Nick Berk, 'Potshot' Bill, everyone who's website I write for for putting
up with me for another year; and you the reader.
Also, a separate shout to Jorge Castano, Flaming Red, Rich N' Famous,
and Tex Benedict here in the UK. I love you guys to death, and you know
why. On an unrelated note, next year's 'Foreign Object' column could well
be in a different style entirely; so keep your fingers crossed. I can't
say more right now, but if it happens then it will be a lot of fun.
The last thing to address, is a question I was asked - who will make it
in 2005 , either big, or establish themselves even more. I say 2005 could
be the year of any of the following names - Cade Sydal, Zack McGuire,
Crazy Shea - just for starters. And I reckon it's the year where Sonjay
Dutt REALLY makes a mark and shows the world just how good he is. And
you know, I'm not too often wrong. About life, well; yes I can be wrong
sometimes. About wrestling, I have a good track record!
One last shout - to my close friend American Kickboxer, and wishing him
and the missus all the best on the birth of their child on Dec 30th. I
love you guys to bits, and will be thinking of you more than usual that
day. All that's left is to wish you all a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year
- from me, my fiancee' Chrissie, and little Andrew and Victoria. And me?
I'll see you in 2005 with my usual mix of interviews, reviews, and this
column. I'm now off to listen to what is currently my favourite musician
(hey, I play guitar you know!), Damien Rice. So keep it 'dareful' (well,
only one person's going to get THAT comment and appreciate it but it's
a win-win situation for me!), and stay safe and well.
