It saddens me to see that the wrestling business is no different overseas
than it is hear. Full of scum and promoters who just want to pass the
blame. Peter, I'm behind you 100%! - Brett
So, I was asked recently about TNA and their World Title situation.
I'm a LONG time approver of Jeff Jarrett, but the time has come, gone,
and is still ticking away rather dramatically at this point for him to
lose the belt; and everyone knows it. But the bigger issue here is not
whether he should lose it, but rather whom should he lose it to? Let's
look at some of the contenders for this honour....
AJ STYLES: AJ is possibly the most obvious choice. Does he ever have a
bad match? Even with opponents not up to his standard, he rarely looks
anything less than great. I would say he must be the odds on contender
with people on either side of the wrestling business, fans to wrestlers;
involved or not.
CHRISTOPHER DANIELS : The 'Fallen Angel' is comparable to AJ, in that
he'd be a great option for the World championship. In one respect, he
might even be a better option; in that he's more experienced. A very good
call for a run with the belt, and it's quite possibly 'his time'.
MONTY BROWN : I can't help but feel that Monty Brown isn't the answer,
or if he was; that it would only be a short term solution. It might work,
it could work; but it's a bit of a risk to take and could well end up
in an Orton/HHH situation where the previous holder feels it necessary
to get the belt back. I actually think his microphone work has more potential
than his in ring abilities....but I think it'd probably be too much of
a chance to take on the belt.
'WILDCAT' CHRIS HARRIS : The only problem with this is the fact that it
would most likely see the split of the best tag team in the US today.
Harris and James Storm have been responsible for rejuvenating tag team
wrestling as a whole in recent times, and this would be the only reason
not to put the World title on the very talented Chris Harris.
JEFF HARDY : I don't think trading the belt from one Jeff to another would
be a good move. Jeff is still, whilst better than he was doing; somewhat
broken down compared to the Jeff Hardy that used to tear the show down
with enthusiastic performances in the past. It's a shame, but that's what
the high flying aspect of wrestling can do to you (and the various issues
that can go with it). Jeff's a good midcarder to upper midcarder to have
on board, but nothing more now.
ABYSS : I guess he might not cross the mind of many, but he IS an option.
As big men go, he's a marked improvement on a lot of WWE's equivalents.
The more underlying problem would be who to book against him. An outside
shot, for the more adventurous gambler.
KEVIN NASH : For name value, yes. For anything else, no; and this is Nash
summed up in a nutshell. He could be of more use than people would imagine
from a name perspective, but you can't imagine him wanting to let go of
it once he'd got hold of the belt; and whilst his recent match with Jeff
Jarrett was way more respectable than many (including myself) would have
expected, you can't imagine it happening too often.
DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE : A couple of years ago I would have said this was
a short term solution, and I guess it still could be. There's more use
and possiblity with him than in the other veterans on board.... but I'd
be looking to someone younger at this point for the company to progress.
They've had the established approach for ages now in Jeff Jarrett, it's
time for a bit more youth to have a run with the ball.
PETEY WILLIAMS : Well, here's my personal long shot. I strongly feel that
a face turn and at least a serious run at the belt (which doesn't essentially
have to end in winning) would be the way to go with the extremely talented
Williams. AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, and Jerry Lynn have proven you
can work the X-Division style and yet still be a credible World title
threat. I see Petey as a good idea, but whether that's just me or others
would agree; is yours to decide.
In shorter thoughts and notes..... Chris Candido could be a contender,
but I couldn't imagine people buying him as a legitimate champion....
Shark Boy would make a talented and comedic aside to things, in the same
way as WWE fans have always rooted for Hurricane (like when he beat The
Rock, for example)..... Ron Killings is always a good card to have in
your hand, and could well be worth another go around in time.....
So there we go. What would YOU go with? Hopefully I've set you up for
a good debate with friends, or at least a think. Anyways, till next time,
don't forget - hating me won't make you talented.
