Review of ACWA Wrestlethon 2, October 18, Morganville, New Jersey
by Lawrence Kleber

ACWA’s Wrestlethon 2 took place Saturday night, October 18 at Playball
Sports in Morganville, New Jersey. Hidden in an industrial complex off
Route 520, Playball Sports was difficult to find, and the venue looked a
bit off kilter for wrestling. However, finding the place and acclimating
to the room was well worth it. I hadn’t been to an ACWA show since last
winter and I was looking forward to a great show. Christopher Joseph
scheduled a highly entertaining event and about 70 of the 80 seats were
filled.

Match 1 Following the national anthem, this charity event began with
the America’s Cup battle royal. Twelve workers entered the ring in
groups of four. When all participants were finally in the ring, the
traditional battle royal rules went into effect. The tournament featured
Don Montoya, Dan McGuire, Brandon Young, Philly Madison, Fred Sampson,
Shane O’Brien, Jay Blaze, Pennywise, Eloy Fiesta, Vik Voorhees, Referee
Matt and Referee Barry. At the start of the match, the large Montoya
threw small McGuire and goofy Madison out of the ring. Madison sat in a
chair for a while and then returned reading his copy of “Idiots Guide to
Professional Wrestling”. Sampson took the book from Madison and began
reading himself. Madison stole his book back. Madison is extremely
funny and I would love to see him in a match with another clown prince,
Shawn Sheridan, in the near future. There was a funny spot when Montoya
squashed McGuire by the ring post. When Sampson was eliminated, he threw
a hissy fit. The ref would not let him back in the ring and he screamed,
“Why?” I turned to him and said, “Fred, you’re not supposed to act like
this. You’re a face!” The contest ended with Montoya and McGuire as the
two last men in the ring. As much as I wanted to see the small, young
McGuire pick up the win, Montoya won the contest.

Roman and Ryan Wing appeared to taunt Montoya. Wing screamed, “You fat
pig, you fat pig,” over and over. When Roman grabbed the stick, he
asked, “Ryan, is he a fat pig?” Don replied, “Between the two of you,
you share half a brain!” Ryan and Roman attack Don and this set up the
second match.

Match 2 In this contest between Ryan Wing and Don Montoya, the match
should have been over with a DDT by Don. But Roman distracted the ref and
Ryan was able to hit Don with the America’s Cup. Following this
injustice, Kevin Knight ran in to clear the ring. Kevin then challenged
Ryan to a match. Kevin Knight, who is always great on the stick, had his
best line with, “In wrestling someone has to lose. It’s just not me!”

Match 3 In his second match in a row, Ryan Wing attacked Kevin Knight
from behind. In mid match, Wing and Roman walked out and just got back
before the count out. Ryan got a chair to hit Kevin with, but sat in it
instead! Kevin inadvertently threw Ryan into Ref Barry, which allowed
Roman to interfere and attack Kevin. To even the score, Don Montoya
stole the America’s Cup from Ryan and clocked him with him. When Barry
came to, Kevin was able to pin Wing. “Sure Thing” Ryan Wing wins the
endurance award for the night!

Match 4 In the first of two women’s matches in a mini-tournament,
Trinity H. Campbell pinned Alicia after hitting her with a strap. It is
always great to see Alicia in the ring and she always goes over big with
the fans.

Match 5 In a face-face women’s contest, the lovely Alere Little
Feather took on Sienna Blaze. As expected, it was a clean, technical
match, and Sienna picked up the win. However, Little Feather looks
better and better with every match. Following the match, Roman and Ryan
attacked Sienna. Ref Matt decided to bar Ryan from ringside during
Roman’s upcoming bull rope match with C. J. Summers. Following this, an
20 minute intermission was called.

Match 6 To start the second act, Orphan (as Hulk Hogan), “Superfly”
Father Ozzy and “Warrior” Slayer took on “Rowdy” Bobby Piper and the
American Express in a six man contest. A funny bit had Orphan trying to
rip off his shirt a la Hogan, but needing assistance from his partners.
There were many funny spots burlesquing the old WWF wrestlers and Piper
picked up the victory with a leg drop after hitting Orphan with a trophy.

Match 7 To complete the women’s tournament, Trinity Campbell pinned
Sienna Blaze reversing Sienna’s pin attempt with a roll over.

Match 8 Whenever Roman and C. J. Summers are in the ring, you’ll
always get an action packed and entertaining match. In this bull rope
match for the heavyweight strap, Roman was thrown into the wall and beat
with the rope very early in the contest. C. J. executed a great drop
kick through the ropes on Roman, who was standing outside the ring. Of
course, Roman had to later throw C. J. into the wall and beat him on the
floor with the rope. After coming off the top rope, C. J. picked up the
victory to become the new champ.

After the matches, I spoke with Christopher Joseph who informed me that
he is trying to run monthly shows in Monmouth County. ACWA will soon be
appearing in Neptune. At 2 hours, 25 minutes, Joseph’s show was well
paced, action filled and family oriented. ACWA has become one of my
favorite promotions.
