Review of SSCW Show, Sunday, August 10, 2002
by Lawrence Kleber

Before I comment on Sunday's action, I must apologize for the late
submission. Directly after the show, I drove to Albany, New York for a
music convention and was unable to find a usable computer in the rat hole
hotel I was staying in. I guess it's time to invest in a lap top!

To my surprise, the SSCW card scheduled for Sunday afternoon, August 10,
2003 at the VFW Hall in Cedar Grove, New Jersey actually took place. To
my greater surprise, the show was well paced, action filled and
thoroughly enjoyable. I commend the new team assisting Carmine Sabia
with his promotion. The VFW hall seats approximately 100 people and
about half of those seats were filled. The room was well lit and fans
had unobstructed views of the matches. The show, scheduled to begin at 1
pm began nicely at 1:05 pm. Good job!

Match1 In the opening contest, Chino Martinez defeated Corvis Fear
(aka Roach) with a roll up pin. The finish with the ref calling for the
bell was a little sloppy. The official at the bell seemed to be
preoccupied. Chino needed to be up first, because he had another gig in
Connecticut that afternoon. As usual, Corvis Fear was highly
entertaining, with great facial expressions. Following the match, Kevin
Knight appeared and began arguing with Andrea, a fan regular at Kevin's
IWF shows. He then clotheslined Chino. On the mike, Kevin explained
that he had issues with Chino and SSCW. With this, new commissioner
Gerry Strauss appeared to explain that SSCW has a new rule book, which
will go into effect on the next show, scheduled for September 26 in Cedar
Grove. He booked a match between Chino and Kevin and informed the fans
that the main event that evening will have Doink the Clown taking on
Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka.

Rob Eckos and Damian Adams then appeared to inform Strauss that their
respective opponents were no shows and they would not have to wrestle on
the card. Gerry first threatened to take Rob's belt and then prevent Rob
or Damian from ever working for SSCW. Neither of these threats phased
them, but when Gerry said that he would hold back their paychecks, they
were ready to fight. Eckos complained, "We have to be in Pottstown by 6
pm!" Gerry booked a match where they would face each other for the
title, and Eckos, in particular, was not happy about this.

Match 2 In a rookie prelim match, Frankie Hawke finally pinned Shane
Nexus after a ten minute match with a number of missed spots. Both of
these young men tried some high flying maneuvers, but the crowd just
couldn't warm up to the match. Fans were shouting, "This match was ten
minutes too long!" When Hawke had a successful pin, the fans cheered
that the match was over.

Match 3 In a stiff girls' match, Tara Charisma pinned Alicia by coming
off the top rope. This face-face match had some nice spots, especially
when the girls had the referee locked between them. Lucky guy!

Match 4 In another face-face contest, Ken Scampi, with Tara Charisma,
pinned Danny Demento following a frog splash. I had not seen Scampi
before and was very impressed with his gimmick and skills. He had a nice
drop kick, a good hurricanrana and he walked the top rope, ala the
Undertaker. In mid match, Danny did a heel turn with a low blow and
flipped Tara into the ring. Later, Danny's buddy, Kevin Matthews,
appeared and hit Tara with a pan. Matthews then turned on Danny and
Scampi was able to obtain the pin. Kevin, who six weeks ago had knee
surgery and better be careful in the ring, then grabbed the stick and
started screaming inaudibly.

Match 5 To close the first half of the show, Damian Adams challenged
Rob Eckos for the title. Eckos began complaining, "Why are you fighting
me? We travel together, we get girls together, we sleep together!" Very
funny, Rob. The match that followed was action filled, spilling outside
the ring. Eckos superkicked Adams, but then superkicked the ref by
mistake. Rob then hit Damian with the belt for the pin and exclaimed,
"Pottstown, here we come!" Eckos is one of the most charismatic guys on
the scene and Adams' skills are impeccable. A great match!

Before intermission, Tito Santana did an old fashioned face promo for his
upcoming match with Mr. Puerto Rico. Of course, Mr. Puerto Rico had to
interrupt and even did a Rock impression.

Match 6 The second half of the show began with a battle royal which
left Kevin Matthews and Danny Demento as the last two combatants. Kevin
threw Danny over the top for the win. Watch that knee, Kevin!

Match 7 The Elm Street Kids, Psycho and Razor, took on Magic and Suba
for the tag straps. Magic and Suba always put on entertaining matches
and after a double suplex by Magic and a nice neckbreaker, Magic pinned
Razor to keep the titles. Of course, Suba was running around obsessing
over shoes.

Match 8 In a cruiser weight 4 way for the title, the team of Dave Greco
and Shawn Sheridan challenged Eddie Better and Plasma, Eddie Guapo and
Boogaloo and Johnny Ova and Dan Barry. Sheridan came out and started
dancing with Costa, the Sign Guy, who is one of the most devoted fans.
When the entrances of the other teams were show, Shawn shouted, "We only
have 12 minutes to do this!" Sheridan and Greco were the first
eliminated, followed by Plasma and Better and then Guapo and Boogaloo.
This put Ova and Barry against each other for the title. Barry finally
pinned Ova. This match was a bit long and I wondered why the charismatic
Greco and Sheridan were the first to be eliminated.

Match 9 Mr. Puerto Rico took on Tito Santana and seemed to have
pinned him, put Tito's foot was on the rope. After an argument of
referees, Tito got the pin with a small package.

Match 10 In the main event, Johnny "Bison" Bravado faced Low Life
Louie Ramos in a no hold barred, falls count anywhere contest. Louie, of
course, came out with a bag of weapons. However, the weapons backfired
on him when Johnny made him a bloody mess. I must admit I bated Johnny
to use the cheese grater. My favorite weapon was a plastic Barney the
Dinosaur toy. Bravado got the pin, after Angel Martinez came out of
nowhere and hit Louie with a frying pan.

I am looking forward to the next SSCW show. I expected a poor card and
was pleasantly surprised with an entertaining afternoon.
