Mercedes Martinez

Updated June 7th - On June 5th, Mercedez defeated Nikki Roxx in the finals of the tournament to become the first NECW Women's Champion.

On June 5, the NECW will present an 8 woman tournament to crown a new NECW Women's Champion. In association with the NECW, WrestlingClothesline.com is proud to present to you a series of interviews with some of the women who will be participating in this prestigious tournament.

We brought you Alere Little Feather and Cindy Rogers! Now we bring you the one and only... Mercedes Martinez

1. What made you ever decide to get involved in professional wrestling?

Wrestling kind of fell into my lap. I was always a fan and always knew that 1 day I would be involved with it. Did I think I was going to actually become a wrestler, not really, but I was at the right place at the right time. College basketball wasnt working out for me due to an injury so I needed something to do athletically, and magically, wrestling appeared and I jumped on the badwagon and still enjoying the ride.

2. Of all the promotions you have worked for, do any stand out as being your favorite? Any least favorites you care to mention?

All the promotions I work for are great. Some of them since I started and some are new. My all time favorite promotions to work for would have to be NECW, WXW, ACW, CZW and IWA Midsouth.

3. You are considered one of the top women wrestling on the indy scene today. Do you think the quality of women wrestler out there today is better or worse than it was a few years ago?

Aww, thanks. I am glad to be considered one of the top women wrestlers in the indy scene. Thats a honor for me. I believe that the quality of women wrestlers has tremendously gotten better. Look at all the variety of women wrestlers you have now compared to when I first started 41/2 yrs ago. Back then, there where only a handful and I could barely get work because they werent any girls. I always wrestled the men. Now, I can actually pick my opponents if I wanted to. LOL

4. Who have been your favorite people to step into the ring with or against? Why?

Any woman wrestler that I get into the ring with or against are great. My favorites would have to be Sumie Sakai, Angel Orsini aka Riptide, Cindy Rogers. The reason for that is with these girls, my matches are always different. I always have to pull out different tricks as well as them. I have had classic matches with Sumie Sakai and she always took me to limit. Angel Orsini is a veteran of this sport and has taught me so much about this business and in the ring, I always have to watch out, beacuse she has the experience and the talent to throw me some curveballs. Same with Cindy Rogers. She is such a different wrestler that I always have to keep guessing at what she might throw in the ring, whether it be a sumbission or just straight up technical moves that I have never seen. My mat game goes to another level when I am in the ring with her.

5. As a woman in a predominately male sport, are you ever treated differently by other wrestlers or promoters?

I never thought I was treated differently. When I was training at Jason Knights school, I was always treated like 1 of the guys. Thats the way it should be anyhow. This is a tough sport and you have to be able to carry the weight so to speak. As far as promotors goes, I never thought so. I always tried to be family friendly with all the promoters and let them see me not just as eye candy but as a wrestler who just happens to be eye candy. Overall, I personally never felt I was treated differently.

6. What wrestlers do you enjoy watching?

Hmmm..... Are you talkinig about Indy wrestling or the big leagues? LOL As far as WWE goes, I love watching Eddie Guerrerro, Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle, and Triple H. I learn and study wrestlers like these to see what I can do ten times better in the ring. In the Indy, I can never get enough of Doug Williams. What a tremendous worker!

7. You will be participating in the NECW Ladies Tournament on June 5. What is your opinion of the other women that are participating in the tournament?

My opinion of the other women are positive for now.LOL They are all competing for something that we would all like to accomplish in any promotion we work for and that is to become woman champion. I am looking forward to wrestling the likes of Angel Orsini, Cindy Rogers, Alere Little Feather, Luscious Lily, Violet FLame, Nikki Roxx. I think they all are amazing wrestlers and they all have unique styles.

8. How do you prepare yourself for the possibility of wrestling three times in one night?

Getting enough sleep!LOL I am training hard and doing alot of cardio to keep myself from getting tired in all the matches. Whether I have 1 or 3, you wont see Mercedes Martinez looking tired in the ring. I am also studying tapes of all the women wrestlers because I would like to know all their styles and be prepared. I dont know who I will be wrestling against or how many, so I am learning and studying all 7 of the other women wrestlers.

9. What has been the highlight of your career thus far?

Hmmm..... I had so many this year that tops my list. I would have to say my match in WXW against Wesna from Germany. That match had so much anticiaption to be the hardest hitting womans match ever, and she def. delivered on the hype as well as I did. For me to train for the match, all I had to go by was a few clips of her matches and I had to mentally prepare myself to deliver a great match. I must say that it was a phenomenal match and i would gladly wrestler her again.

10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully in the WWE so the rest of the world can see Mercedes Martinez. Its not a far fetch dream, I just have to keep doing what I am doing and hopefully fate comes into play and I get the honor and priveledge to wrestle all over the world for the WWE. For now, The indy scene is awesome. This is how I got started and without the fans support, I wouldnt be where I am today. I do it all for them.
