We are just 3 weeks or so away for the Jeff Peterson
Cup and the athletes are starting to prepare for their
first round matches now that the brackets have been
announced. The NWA Florida office has been in contact
with a few of the competitors and they have had some interesting things
to say.
One of the more anticipated first round matchups is a
battle of TNA performers who have met before, MR.630
Jerrelle Clark and the captain of Team Canada, Petey
Williams.
"Petey is a hell of an athlete, a guy who can go with
anyone, and who has as good a shot as anyone of
winning this tournament. Well that is as good as
anyone who doesn't have to wrestle ME in the first
round that is. I do look forward to finally getting in
the ring with him when he DOESN'T have Roode, D'Amore
and the rest of his gang around to help him out
though. It will be a nice change of pace for me."
Williams laughed when told of Clark's comments. " If
Jerrelle thinks I need those guys to help me win my
matches then he has been dropped on his head by my
Canadian Destroyer one too many times. and if he isn't
careful, June 10th in Davie it may happen for the LAST
TIME."
Another match that has indy fans buzzing is the
matchup between former WWE Cruiserweight Champ James
Gibson, and NWA Florida X Champ Mikey Batts.
James Gibson has done it all in this business, trained
by the great Dean Malenko, won the IPW cruiserweight
title, signed with WCW, worked for New Japan, and won
the WWE Cruiserweight strap as well. With a resume
that impressive it would be easy to be satisfied with
his career and easy to look past a kid like Mikey
Batts, but talking to Gibson, one can tell he's as
hungry as ever...
"Mikey Batts is a tough kid. He's the NWA Florida X
champ, and he's beaten a lot of top talent in Florida,
I know he was taught well by his cousin Billy Kidman
and by Roderick Strong, two guys I have wrestled alot
before so I'm sure they've given him a few tips on me.
So while I know I can win this whole tournament, hell,
I wouldn't be in it if I didn't think I could win it,
I'm not looking past this kid for a second."
Mikey knows it would be a huge step in his career with
a first round win over a name like James Gibson, and
he is focused. "Obviously, this would be the biggest
win of my career, I mean, winning the X title was big,
and wrestling on PPV for TNA is enormous as well, but
to be able to say I beat James Gibson on my way to
winning the Jeff Peterson Cup, well , obviously that
would be an amazing feather in my cap."
One more match added to the first night of action in
Brandon was originally going to be for Lex Lovett's
NWA Southern Heavyweight title, but after AJ Styles'
victory over Jeff Jarrett at the TNA PPV this past
Sunday, the champion is now suddenly the challenger
and the challenger is now the champion in a match for
the biggest prize in this sport.... the NWA WORLD
HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE.
"Thats the best news I've heard in months!" pronounced
Lex Lovett when contacted last night regarding AJ
Styles' win over Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World
Heavyweight Title . " Now I finally get my due around
this place. Now I finally get to show everyone what
I've said for the past 2 years. That Lex Lovett is NOT
just the best wrestler in Florida, not just the best
wrestler in the United States, but the best wrestler
in the entire WORLD, and June 10th, AJ Styles is gonna
find that out as well, as I take his title and cap off
my career in STYLES.PUN INTENDED."
Reached for comment last night after his thrilling
victory, the 3x World Champ had this to say in
respone, " Lex is a heck of a wrestler, and the
Southern Title is a big belt in the NWA, no doubt
about it, but I waited for a YEAR..a YEAR..to get my
hands back on this 10 pounds of gold, and if he thinks
for ONE SECOND, that I am coming into his backyard, to
lose this belt he is in for the surprise of his life,
because other than my new baby boy, nothing in the
world means more to me that this belt, and Friday
night June 10th, he's going to find out that I am not
just the best wrestler around, I am not just
PHENOMENAL, I AM THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE
WORLD... an I'm gonna stay that way for a long long
time."
