Brian Logan Interview.

By P. Staniforth 2003.

I've never had the opportunity to interview a referee before, so when the opportunity arose itself (Thanks Nick!); no way was I going to let it slip away. Currently one of the best young referees in professional wrestling, here’s what was said when I recently caught up with Combat Zone Wrestling’s own; Brian Logan.

PETER STANIFORTH) : Hi Brian, and thanks for your time; it’s much appreciated. When did you first watch wrestling?

BRIAN LOGAN) : I discovered wrestling at 8 years old, on cable channel 29. The first match I saw was the Wild Samoans fighting against Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas, and after that I was hooked.

PETER) : And when did you decide you wanted to be part of it all?

BRIAN) : At 21 years old, I decided to pursue a career. I myself never wanted to wrestle but just be part of the business in any way I could, as I knew I didn't have the size to become an actual wrestler. But ironically, I was trained at the Wild Samoan Wrestling School in Allentown, PA.

PETER) : The Samoan’s are great guys, in my opinion maybe wrestling’s best family of them all; with a true passion and love for the business. What was it like learning there?

BRIAN) : Working for the Samoans, was a good place for connections. I got to referee such names as The Rock, Owen Hart, Johnny Smith, The Dudley’s, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guererro, The Headbangers, Kane and Undertaker, Rikishi, etc. However, I wanted work near Philadelphia since it is closer to me. The GWA in Philly picked me up and this is where I met students such as Wifebeater, Johnny Kashmere; as well as other GWA workers such as Nick Berk, Ron Starr, Mac Smack, the Pitbulls, Trent Acid, and Tom Carter.

PETER) : That’s one great list of talent, and you can only improve from being around such names as those. Where did you go from here?

BRIAN) : Well, eventually, this led to NWA New Jersey where I made more connections such as Donnie B, Bobcat, Kevin Kelly, the Backseat Boyz as a team; etc. The GWA closed after most of the guys left. I heard about CZW through Z Barr. I met John Zandig and talked to him, he watched me bump, and said to me “ok, I'll call you”. Then came the ‘Break the Barrier’ show at the old ECW arena, I got that through Chris Lash who needed a ring rental; so I called Afa the Wild Samoan and he rented it out. Chris then booked me, so I refereed the Justice Pain vs. Nick Gage match. John then hired me fulltime and the rest as they say is history.

PETER) : What promotions have you worked for so far in your career?

BRIAN) : WXW, Hardway Wrestling, EWF, GWA, NWA New Jersey, Phoenix Championship Wrestling, and many others; have booked me.

PETER) : What would you consider your favourite moment in wrestling, and the one you enjoyed the least?

BRIAN) : The best moment for me personally was in CZW, the Cage of Death 3 event. What was truly awesome was our first show in Philadelphia, selling out that building was amazing. The worst moment was when Messiah was attacked, and whilst not wrestling related as such it was a sick thing.

PETER) : Yes, the incident with Messiah is one none of us will forget in a hurry; sadly. Nevertheless, to me; the kinship of the wrestling business will always win out over the kind of people who perpetrated such an attack. Who do you feel has the ability to go on to a bigger stage and become a mainstream star? And who are your favourite people to work with?

BRIAN) : Guys with great futures, to me; are The Backseat Boyz (hands down, the best tag team in indy wrestling today), Nate Hatred, Sonjay Dutt - all instantly come to mind, although there are more of course. My favourite to work with, is definitely the Backseat Boyz; for too many reasons to list.

PETER) : Well, I’d have to go along with that; Trent Acid and Johnny Kashmere are certainly my favourite tag team out there today. In addition, Sonjay is both a superb worker and a great guy. What are your feelings on CZW’s ever present label of being ‘hardcore’?

BRIAN) : As far as ‘hardcore’ goes, I personally think CZW is branded hardcore. I respect the toughness of each of the guys, but its not just hardcore there. There are many talented junior heavyweight workers there, and other workers that don't get the credit as much as they should.

PETER) : I totally agree there, people have this habit of not paying attention to the rest of the guys on the show. This is meant as absolutely no knock on the guys who do the hardcore side of things, but CZW present the best of all styles of action in my opinion and are not just a one sided coin. How do you see the future of CZW at this point?

BRIAN) : The future of CZW? Well, who knows? I never though I'd be on television or get to travel and yet here I am doing it. CZW has, by far, the hardest working locker room; and more importantly a tightly knit locker room. All the boys are willing to make any of the others look good, it’s a family. That is what makes it special. I would say ROH and CZW are the biggest Indies out there. They both offer something different and have appealing products. CZW has been around only for a few years and yet look where it is now -from a warehouse in Mantua, NJ to Japan, Europe, Mexico, and the ECW arena. The sky is the limit.

PETER) : Every CZW worker I have had the pleasure of speaking to, has always said that about the locker room. I think a few other wrestling promotions could learn from that attitude that is so prevalent in CZW, of all the boys looking out for each other. To wrap up, do you have any messages for the fans?

BRIAN) : Thank you for all you do for us. We hope to keep entertaining you the best way we can. In the end, it’s all about the fans. If you haven't seen us, check us out!
