Sonjay Dutt Interview
By Peter Staniforth 2003
----------------------------------------

I have here one of the top stars of Combat Zone Wrestling, and the indy circuit right now. A man with a bright future in wrestling, who is one of the hottest cruiserweights in the business - Sonjay Dutt.

PETER STANIFORTH : Let me just start out by saying thanks for your time in this interview, I know you're busy and it's much appreciated. Tell us about your childhood and growing up.

SONJAY DUTT : Growing up was normal, I mean - I'm not some kind of weirdo stripper or whore; I'm just a pro wrestler. My childhood consisted of a very deep obsession with pro wrestling. I watched, I ate it, I slept it, I did everything with it, and I'm still the same now. I knew as a child that I would become a pro wrestler.

PETER : When did you first see wrestling?

SONJAY : Well, my father was always a huge fan; so I pretty much grew up with wrestling on the television as my dad would always watch it and attend the local shows. I grew up with it and instantaneously, I was hooked.

PETER : Who trained you to wrestle, and what were your early matches like?

SONJAY : Larry Sharpe. The matches sucked, but back then I sure thought I was doing a decent job; or I guess it was decent for being my first few matches. Most of them were outdoors type shows and was just practice in front of a crowd, not like I had a clue as to what I was doing in there.

PETER : What's it like working for CZW, one of the most groundbreaking promotions out there right now? What do you feel have been your better matches so far, and the ones that you haven't been as happy with?

SONJAY : I love CZW and it's the best place to be in wrestling, I couldn't ask for anything better than this; CZW is where it's at. My favourite matches have been the 3 way ladder match from 'Night of Infamy', versus B-Boy at Best of the Best, versus Trent Acid, and all the matches with Ruckus have been fun to watch. As for worst matches, I can't pick out a particular worst one; but the stuff from when I first started isn't my favourite to watch at all.

PETER : Who are your friends in the wrestling business? The CZW guys are all really tight friends, I hear; and it's a really positive place to be.

SONJAY : Friends in the business, ahh, Ruckus, Chris Cash, B-Boy, Z-Barr, Trent Acid everyone in the CZW locker room, I'd say. I also met some really cool people in Florida last weekend, Colt Cabana, Reckless Youth, Scoot Andrews, Babylon, Rod Steele, Rodrick Strong, and the whole crew down there.

PETER : What are your feelings on the WWE, and also NWATNA and the indy's both UK and USA based?

SONJAY : Right now, the WWE is a sinking ship. I could write you a 10 page essay on why.As for the smaller promotions, the more the better, the more places to work, the more people like I can make a living. I've yet to work any UK indies and am really looking foward to making the trip out there one day.

PETER : I'll work on it for you, and see what I can do to help. I know people would definitely mark out for your work over here in England. Who are your favourite wrestlers to watch?

SONJAY : Ric Flair, Eddy Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Cactus Jack, I watch everything and anything. All my life consists of is watching pro wrestling tapes.

PETER : That's so much like me it's scary. Everyone knows my idolising of Flair since a teenager, and Foley is quite simply - a wonderful person and wrestler. Can you sum yourself up as a wrestler in a few words?

SONJAY : Entertaining, crazy, high flying, dancing, cutting a rug.

PETER : What are your plans for the future?

SONJAY : To keep on doing what I'm doing and hopefully make a comfortable living at this one day.

PETER : Hey, that even sounds good to me! Well, to finish off this interview - I'd like to sincerely thank you for your time again, and it's been a real pleasure talking with you. Is there anything you'd like to promote before we stop?

SONJAY : T-shirts and video tapes are available at my website, which is www.sonjay.com .
