Malachi Interview.
By P.Staniforth 2005.
Heres a chance to catch a few thoughts and comments from a rising star on the independent scene, Malachi.
PETER) : Thanks for your time. What were your childhood years like?
MALACHI) : I was born in the South, and grew up there in a small town that's not on any maps. I had a good upbringing and a family that was very loving. Everyone was around, from grandmothers to second cousins, and we were all close. When I was about ten years of age, my family moved to Ohio; and that's where I went to high school and made some great friends that I have still to this day. While in school I played many sports such as baseball, basketball, and golf. I know most wrestlers come from football or wrestling backgrounds, but I think my background was beneficial in the fact that I am very agile for a man of my size (which is 6' 4 and 260 lbs.). I believe this is due to my basketball training. Also my body has received less abuse as opposed to say a football player or wrestler. Some of my sports accomplishments are in Basketball - District championship team, and Baseball - All-Star team two years in a row.
PETER) : So, when did wrestling first come into your life?
MALACHI) : My grandfather was a huge wrestling fan, and he never missed a televised event. It didn't matter if it was the local indy promotion or the NWA - he loved them all. But being in the South it was almost always the NWA. I watched wrestling with him as far back as I can remember, so I guess I have been viewing wrestling since birth.
PETER) : Did you know you wanted to be a wrestler, or did it just kind of happen by surprise?
MALACHI) : Being a fan all my life, after I graduated it seemed like the only choice for me, and because I was athletically gifted and a larger guy; I thought I would give it a shot. I also love to travel, and to travel around beating people up seemed like a great job.
PETER) : I can see the thinking behind that! How did you get your first break in the business?
MALACHI) : Well, I would say going to the Wild Samoan Training Center was my first break, because the training I received was top notch. I am extremely happy with the training I received after I completed the program, I could hold my own against anyone as far basics were concerned. All the finer things only come with experience. I am still waiting for my first BIG break but I feel it will come when it's time.
PETER) : A good approach. Who specifically helped you in your training?
MALACHI) : Afa The Wild Samoan and Headshrinker Samu were my main trainers, and they did a great job, but Smooth Tommy Suede, Supreme Lee Great, and Mana The Polynesian Warrior were the guys that really pushed me to become better and better. We all pushed each other, and that is a good group of wrestlers.
PETER) : What were your first matches like?
MALACHI) : Extremely basic. I have almost always had solid matches, maybe not the best (at first) but always solid. I think this is due to my belief that you should never try things you haven't done over and over at practice.
PETER) : How would you describe yourself as a wrestler?
MALACHI) : I would have to say innovative. I can keep up with the cruiserweights and go toe to toe with the big boys. I use a finisher that I created and still no one uses to this day. It is a spinning sit out power bomb. It is hard to explain but to see it is a thing of beauty.
PETER) : What has been your favourite match or show that you were involved in?
MALACHI) : My favorite match so far in my career was a hardcore title match when I was going in as the champion against Sugga. When all was said and done, Gene Snitsky had gotten involved, and there was a barbed wire baseball bat, garbage can, ladder, 2 chairs, powder to the eyes; and two tables stacked on top of each other then lit on fire that we both went through. Sadly I lost the title, but I held it six times before that, so I got over it. My favorite show was the Yokozuna memorial show where I worked the Island Boys (Kimo and Ekmo later known as Three Minute Warning Jamal and Rosie). It was a great honor to be asked to work the show, and then to get to work his cousins - it was great.
PETER) : Who are your friends in the business?
MALACHI) : Tommy Suede, Mana, and Supreme Lee Great are my really close friends; then there are countless others.
PETER) : What has been your lowest point in wrestling so far?
MALACHI) : About fifteen months ago Gene Snitsky and myself were wrestling Headshrinker Samu and Mana, when a mistimed move caused me to get two herniated discs in my neck. The next night I worked Slyk Wagner Brown, and was dizzy the whole match, so I got it checked out. I spent seven months in therapy and a few months in the gym, and am in the process of returning to proper form. I should be there in a month or two.
PETER) : What do you like to do in your spare time?
MALACHI) : I am going to college to be an electronic engineer. I should be finishing within the next year. Other than that I like to study wrestling films and read.
PETER) : What five words do you feel describe you best?
MALACHI) : Honest, intelligent, hard working, entertaining, innovative.
PETER) : What are your main plans for the future?
MALACHI) : To succeed at wrestling. Be it overseas, or here in the states. If I must leave the sport for any reason, I will continue with my back up plan of becoming an engineer.
PETER) : What are your thoughts on WWE and TNA, and the indy's?
MALACHI) : I kind of stopped watching WWE, so really can't say except I would like to work there someday. I think TNA is giving guys who wouldn't typically make it in the WWE a shot at proving themselves. I love the indy's, it's the breeding ground for almost all superstars of today. I wish the pay was better.
PETER) : Who do you like to watch or learn from?
MALACHI) : I love Muta. He was way ahead of his time and should have been a world champion here in the states. I am also a Randy Savage fan. I think he is one of the greats and regularly steal his moves, just kidding (no-one could steal his moves!). The Road Warriors were my favourite tag team. I loved how dominant they were and how they were very aggressive.
PETER) : And to finish up, is there anything you'd like to promote, or anyone you'd like to thank?
MALACHI) : Sure, Afa for training me, Samu for taking me on the road with him for many months and teaching me the finer points of wrestling, John Rambo for always giving me a place to wrestle and train; and of course all my best friends Mana, Tommy Suede, Supreme Lee Great, and Jason for making me a better wrestler everyday. I would also like to thank my mother, younger brother and the rest of my family and friends for there support. One more thing I want to say to my old roommate Adrian Dickerson, get a hold of me! Email Mana for all I care, (wxwmana@hotmail.com) - just get in touch.
PETER) : Thanks for the interview, and all the best for the future.
MALACHI) : Thank you.
