Sabian Interview. By P.Staniforth 2005.
Heres a chance to get to know one of the stars of Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), the extremely talented Sabian.
PETER) : Thank you for the time taken for this interview. Share with us, a little of your childhood.
SABIAN) : I had a very active childhood. My parents always kept me involved in some type of sport to keep me out of trouble. I played basketball, football, baseball. I took karate and gymnastics when I was younger. But even with all of that going on, I still found time to get into trouble.
PETER) : I do this to keep ME out of trouble! When did you first view wrestling?
SABIAN) : I guess when I was like eight or nine years old. Once I started watching it though, I was hooked.
PETER) : Did you know then that you wanted to be a wrestler, or did it just kind of happen by surprise?
SABIAN) : Nah, I knew right away that I wanted to be a wrestler. My parents used to think that it was a phase I was going through. I always liked watching Owen Hart when he was known as the Blue Blazer. Once I started watching ECW, the cruiserweights in WCW and Japanese tapes; wrestling was definitely the only thing that I wanted to do.
PETER) : I loved to watch Owen at that time too. How did you get your first break in the business?
SABIAN) : My cousin saw an advertisement for a wresting school run by Hardrock Hamilton. We went to talk to him about it, and he seemed like a shady dude so nothing came out of it. Soon after that, I saw an advertisement for a school being run by Damon Feldman, and I went to check that out.
PETER) : So, was this where you ended up training?
SABIAN) : Well, first I was being trained at Damon Feldman's school which wasn't even a school, by Krash Krew and Iggy Rose; and didn't really learn much at all. Nothing against them, but I wasn't really getting anything out of it. Also, there were alot of pussies there that kissed ass to get special treatment. Then they took us to Hawkins Gym in North Philadelphia, and I started getting trained mainly by Jerry Schaffer. Tony Nitro and Mercury were also influential in my training.
PETER) : Looking back, what would you say your first matches were like?
SABIAN) : Pretty bad. I had no clue in terms of psychology and pacing. My matches were really just a bunch of moves and some flips, and that's it. The potential was always there though, and I always listened to any advice that the vets would give me.
PETER) : How would you describe yourself as a wrestler?
SABIAN) : Now, I would say that I'm more well rounded than I was a couple years ago. I think my strong points are my psychology, my speed and my mat wrestling. I owe a lot to Mike Quackenbush and Skayde for helping me with my all around development. They've really broadened my Lucha Libre and submission repertoire. I still have alot to learn but I think I'm getting there.
PETER) : Ive been blessed to know Mike a long time online, and he really is a great guy. What has been your favourite match or show that you were involved in?
SABIAN) : My favourite show was definitely Cage Of Death 6. All of us at CZW worked hard to make that a successful show, and I think we accomplished that. The match we had was probably also my favourite match because we pretty much went all out, and had a match that's going to be talked about for a long time.
PETER) : Who do you consider your friends in the business?
SABIAN) : Joker and Eddie Kingston are like brothers to me. I definitely consider them family. I have other people in the business that I also consider family.
PETER) : What would you consider your lowest point in wrestling so far?
SABIAN) : That would have to be when my collarbone got injured last year. Normally, when I get injured, I won't take time off no matter what. That was the first time I had to take it easy for a while and ease back into things. It was a real stressful and frustrating time for me.
PETER) : What do you like to do in your spare time?
SABIAN) : I like to chill with my people, and study tapes religiously.
PETER) : What five words you feel describe you best?
SABIAN) : Those five words would have to be: Loyal, Dedicated, Respectful, Grateful and Unselfish.
PETER) : Looking to the future now, what would you like to achieve?
SABIAN) : My ultimate goal is to wrestle in JAPAN. Whatever it takes to get that opportunity, I'm going to do it. I'm going to continue to work hard until I accomplish it.
PETER) : What are your houghts on WWE and TNA, and the indy's?
SABIAN) : WWE? Other than Japan, this is were we all would like to be. I honestly never really saw this as a realistic goal due to size reasons, but if I was ever given the opportunity; it would be hard to turn down. TNA? I haven't watched TNA in a while. The last time I saw it though, the X division was the only thing that I was interested in. In respect to the indys, theres a lot of politics, a lot of egos; but that's just the nature of the business. I enjoy working the indy's, I just wish that promotions could get along with each other better so that all of us could benefit from it.
PETER) : Well said. Who do you like to watch or learn from?
SABIAN) : Any and everything involving Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, Jushin Lyger, Chris Benoit and Toryumon.
PETER) : To wrap things up, I just want to thank you again for the interview. Is there anything you'd like to promote; or anyone you'd like to thank?
SABIAN) : I just want to thank everyone that's helped me along the way.
Fellow workers, promoters, bookers. The fans that show support and appreciate
my hard work. The marks that think they know it all and think they can
outdo what we do, believe it or not; you people keep me going as well.
Other than that, keep supporting indy wrestling. And thank you, Peter.
