JWA

January 19th was a busy day for pro wrestling in the NY/NJ area. With ROH, NWS, IWF, some promotion in Philly, and PWX all running shows what is a wrestling fan to do? With so many choices, there was only one obvious one for the Clothesline Crew... JWA! (and may I add that we seemed to be the only wrestling "news" site at the event. Just another example of our dedication to our readers by making sure ALL the events in the area were covered this weekend and not just a select few)

JWA presented "Girls Night Out" (what was supposed to be an "all girls show") at the Elks Club in Boonton, NJ. Prior to the show, the crew (Frank, Joseph Velez, and myself) had dinner at the Boonton Street Grille.

The show was scheduled to start at 7 and began about 7:10. Luminaries in attendance included Ed (of Team Blondage fame), Eric Shafer, Buttery Bert Williams, and Bill Ding. The crowd (as of the second match) was counted at 34.

The ring announcer for the evening... Tiffani Monroe.

The evening began with some "dark matches" that featured some of the JWA talent.

In the first match Tornado (who looked like he got his outfit at Cerenzio's yard sale and came to the ring to Scorpion's "Rock You Like a Hurricane") defeated Ace Jack (Black Jack was already taken) with a roll up. A good opening match with both men putting forth a good effort. By the way, the ring bell is a water pitcher.

Next up, Just G (still using quite possibly the worst name in wrestling) defeated Travis Blackchurch with Penny Dreadful. Blackchurch looked like Dave Navaro on crack. Nothing spectacular here. G won with a reverse chokeslam.

The National Anthem was next followed by Commissioner Rick Silver asking the locker room to come out and surround the ring for a moment of silence for the passing of Mad Max, a long time friend and JWA wrestler.

The first match of "Girls Night Out" saw Beth prepare to face Alexa Thatcher. As the two locked up, Corvis Fear entered the ring. So much for the all girls show that was being promoted. To make a long story short, Corvis ended up wrestling Alexa (who looked a LOT like Corvis' girlfriend which led several in attendance to believe she could be a sister). With so many promotions running tonight no one wanted Corvis? Evidentially not. Alexa won with a Tomikazee and Corvis went from the "Expert" to the "Loser".

Amy Lee with Luxurious Lynne defeated Mercedes Martinez after hitting her with a shoe. (The scheduled opponent, Alicia, was not to be found). Amy Lee dominated the beginning of the match. Mercedes made a comeback and the two women began to brawl around ringside. Lynne attempted to distract the ref but the ref kept watching the action. In fact, the ref actually watched as Lynne threw her shoe into the ring and Amy used in on Mercedes. However, instead of calling for a DQ, he slid into the ring and made the three count. What a waste of Mercedes talent and ability. The ref needs to go back to being the president of the Hair Club for Men and the bookers need to put actual talent like Mercedes in matches that can show her true ability.

Luxurious Lynne then accompanied the team of Luscious Lily and Della Morte to the ring to take on the Diva Killaz (Miss Deville and Kayla Sparks) with their manager, Kenny Cassanova. The Divas entered to the Spice Girls. After the three danced their way around ringside, Casanova started with a hilarious prayer. Lily and Della dominated much of the match, beating down the much smaller Kayla. Kayla was finally able to make the tag and Deville was able to knock down Della long enough to hit her with a Swanton for the pinfall. A good match with three good wrestlers and one Delta Burke.

After the match, Lynne got on the mic and spoke of how she hasn't forgotten that Casanova hit her with a pie. It's a good thing she remembered because none of the 34 people in attendance knew it ever happened. Casanova tries to give Lynne a ballshot that had no effect (yet in an earlier match when one of the girls was hit below the belt she crashed to the mat in pain. Hmmm). He then gave her a Shattered Dreams. No luck there. Lynne hit Casanova below the belt and he was down. The Diva Killaz then made the save and Kayla held Lynne down as Deville hit her with a Swanton.

Intermission saw "Cassaoke" (at least that's what we are calling it as Kenny Casanova walked around the room singing Karaoke). The fans were treated to Casanova's renditions of such classics as "Delilah", "Fools Rush In", "Sea of Love", and "Don't Be Cruel". During "Don't Be Cruel", Cindy Rogers grabbed the mic and finished the song! Cssanova is simply hilarious and had us (and nearly everyone else in attendance) rolling on the floor.

Tiffani Monroe got in the ring to begin the second half of the show. She noticed that the crowd hand dwindled to about 14 and asked where everyone is. "OK, we're going to start anyway", she stated.

Great Cerenzio entered the ring. "Girls Night Out" and Cerenzio is in the ring? I guess it's just one more promoter not having enough faith in women's wrestling to actually do an all woman show as promised? Another long story short, Great Cerenzio and Hubie Volk retained the GWF tag team titles by beating Erik Andretti and Textbook Billy Madison. If this was a match to try and attempt to lure some of the remaining 14 fans in attendance to the next GWF show it may have backfired. Andretti is a good worker but thrown into this match he was wasted. Cerenzio and Volk as a tag team? Ugh. Did I mention that this was supposed to be a ladies show?

Little Jeannie defeated Alere Little Feather with a belly to back suplex into a bridge. A good match even if Jeannie seems to have gone from serious wrestler to laughing and smirking through all her matches lately.

Joe Rules entered the ring to talk about the "Mostly Women's Show" they were having. OK, that was funny. It still doesn't explain the fact that the advertised show didn't say "mostly" nor does it explain why, as the promoter, he didn't have enough faith in the female talent that he booked to put on an actual show featuring just them. He picked the ticket girl out of the crowd for a "date" with him. She ended up being Rick Silver's girlfriend. Silver then came in and a match began. It felt like 1991 - 2004 all over again. Joe Rules who has retired more times than Terry Funk lost after a Donkey Punch.

The main event was next as Ariel defended her JWA Women's Title against Cindy Rogers. Ariel's entrance music was "Cest La Vie" by B*Witched. (the fact that Joe knew this, scares me). Match of the night as these two battled back and forth trading chops and submission holds. Cindy dominated a lot of the match, wearing down Ariel with various submission holds but Ariel hit a stunner for the pin. (Personally, I think Ariel needs a different finisher as the stunner is very anti climactic). Lily and Della hit the ring and beat down Ariel. The locker room empties and all the women begin to brawl in the ring. The water pitcher is rung several times as the women fall to the floor and continue to battle. During the melee, Kenny Casanova got confused and mistakenly started attacking one of the ringside photographers. The photographer (who will remain unnamed) snapped and started screaming and cursing up a storm before going to pack up. Dude, it's wrestling! It's all in good fun! How many people in attendance would kill to have that type of involvement? How many actual great shots could you have possibly missed during those 5 seconds? Get over it! Hell, I'll pay you! Ariel and Mercedes remain in the ring and Ariel raises her belt in victory. Great match by the two women that the Clothesline feel are two of the top 10 in the business today (#2 and #6 to be exact! LOL).

As with other shows that have promoted themselves as being "all girl" shows, my problem is with the addition of so many men's matches? Why say you are going to have an all girls show then not have it? It makes it look (whether you want it to or not) like you do not have the faith in the women to do an entire show.

Overall, a very enjoyable show. The crowd (as small as it was) started to get into it toward the end. The talent that was booked for the show was a who's who of women's wrestling today. (Not to mention a lot of Top 50 Women). As long as the people in attendance have a good time, what else matters? Hell, if nothing else, I met Buttery Bert Williams!
