Ten Questions With . . .

Slyk Wagner Brown

It's been a little over a year since I first had the pleasure of interviewing Slyk Wagner Brown for The Wrestling Clothesline. In that time, Slyk has become a common name on the indy scene and has made more than a name for himself. Slyk has been kind enough to take time out of his very hectic schedule to do a follow up interview for us. For more on Slyk Wagner Brown be sure to check out his website at www.slykwagnerbrown.net and while you're there sign up for his newsletter!!

1. Since our last interview, a year ago, the number of promotions you work for has increased tremendously. You have now worked for (or work for) promotions such as JAP, ROH, NWA TNA, USA Pro, JCW, WXW, and a slew of others. Did you have a goal to work for any of these feds in particular? Are there any feds you have not yet worked for that you would like to?

Holyslyk, I can't believe it's been that long already. My goal was to work for all the promotions above... especially Ring Of Honor. I was set to debut for MLW in October, but unfortunately the show was postponed. I've always wanted to work for them, so that was very disappointing for me.

2. How do you market yourself to new promoters?

I send them a promo package which includes a copy of my best matches, 8x10, and my website information.

3. Your arsenal of finishing maneuvers has changed somewhat over time. How do you come up with the actual move as a finisher? How do you come up with the name for the move?

I daydream all the time about wrestling. I normally come up with these crazy ideas for moves while I'm driving to a show, taking a shower, or eating lunch. Sometimes I come up with the name myself or I'll seek help from my fans, aka: Slyk-Unit!

4. You had a match in JAP against Mafia that many people feel was one of the best matches of all time. What were your feelings as the match took place? How did you feel about the response you got from the crowd after the match? Do you feel that was one of your best matches?

As the match took place, I felt different... I was in the zone. I remember thinking before the match, this is my first time wrestling this guy, I wonder how it will turn out. Normally, your first match against someone doesn't turn out that good, because you're not used to wrestling that person.... but Maff and I have it, we have chemistry in the ring. The response from the crowd after the match was truly one of the best moments in my career. That was my first standing ovation and I will cherish that moment forever. There is no doubt in my mind that this match was one of my best!

5. With that in mind, how do you go from having a "Match of the Year" candidate, to wrestling in your next match? Is there any added pressure on you?

It's difficult to go from having a "match of the year" type match to something less, but that's the wrestling business. Absolutely, once you have a match like that, you want to have matches of that calibre all the time.

6. You worked a few matches for NWA TNA (as did April). How did that come about? Any idea if you will be going back anytime in the near future?

We contacted them for work and they booked us for a couple shows. I'm not sure what the future holds for us in TNA at the moment, but we would love to return in the near future.

7. You and April are the first ever intergender JAPW Tag Team champions. How do you think your match against DRS went? How does it feel to be one of the few intergender tag team champions in wrestling history?

I thought our match against DRS went very well. I think the fans enjoyed the match and reacted well to us winning the titles. It feels great being one of the few intergender tag champions in wrestling history and I appreciate JAPW giving us the opportunity.

8. What has been your most embarrassing moment in wrestling thus far? (Was it when you nearly hung yourself getting into the ring that one time? hehehe)

That's cold. My most embarrassing moment in wrestling happened in Boston around 1998/99. I was standing behind the curtain waiting for my music when Brian Lee patted me on the butt and said 'get out there and kick some ass.' I said, 'no doubt!' and walked through the curtain. I entered the ring and hit the ropes a couple times and the fans started laughing at me. I'm wondering what the hell they're laughing at, so I look over at my opponent, who's practically in tears, and he points to the long stream of toilet paper hanging from the back of my tights!

9. How could someone possibly confuse Guns N Roses for Barry Manilow?

I don't know, but whoever it was probably bled to death from the ear after listening to Barry Manilow.

10. You (and April) are on the road traveling from one show to the next A LOT. How do you keep sane driving all that distance to one show then, usually, having to drive the same distance back home the same night? Is it all worth it in the end?

It ain't easy. That many hours in a car can really get to you, especially if you're sore, traffic, tolls, stuff like that. Is it all worth it? For sure... the experience alone makes it all worth it, because we damn sure don't do this for the money!
