Pro Wrestling Unplugged DVD Review: Pitbull/Public Enemy Memorial Cup 2006
This was followed by promos from each of the participants in the tournament. Some of the promos were excellent. Some of the teams shouldn't have been given mic time. Prior to the action getting underway, they paid tribute to Public Enemy and Pitbull Anthony. Tod Gordon came out with Pitbull Gary Wolfe, and Annie Social. Gary Wolfe talked briefly about his former tag team partner, Anthony and the Public Enemy (Rocco Rock and Johnny Grunge). Annie Social, who I believe is Tod Gordon's "executive assistant", announced that all the matches in tonight's tournament would No-Disqualification and No-Countout. Then for reasons unknown to the average viewer, Annie attacked the ring attendant and a catfight ensued. The Pitbull/Public Enemy Memorial Cup was paraded around the ring and taken to the back so the bouts could begin! Round #1 The Briscoe Brothers (Mark & Jay Briscoe) vs. The Krash Krew (Kwame & Gemini): Not the greatest outing by either team. Most of the match was brawling. At one point, Jay swung a chair at the Krew but accidentally hit Mark in the face. Mark went down, but only for a moment, and went on to continue and win the match with Jay. After the match, Mark was taken to the hospital, leaving Jay without a partner for the next round. The Backseat Boyz (Trent Acid & Johnny Kashmere) vs. The Angus Brothers (Billy & Danny Angus): The Backseat Boyz still come out and many of the girls (and women) in the crowd stuff money down their pants. Sadly, that's pretty much the highlight of most of their matches. More wrestling in this match than in then in the previous one but I don't think anyone thought the Angus Brothers had a chance... and they were right. The Rotweillers (Homicide & Ricky Reyes) vs. The Outcast Killaz (Oman Tortuga & Diablo Santiago): I have become quite a fan of Tortuga and Santiego. They have a good look. They can wrestle and brawl. Most importantly, they are entertaining as all hell. The match was announced as Outcast Killaz vs a "Mystery Team" in the first round. The mystery team ended up being the Rotweillers (Ricky Reyes and Homicide). It was an excellent match which saw the Rotweillers win (not a shocker there). The Briscoe Brothers then came to the ring. Jay announced that Mark had some teeth knocked during their match and couldn't wrestle anymore tonight. Jay Briscoe said he would continue in the Tournament even if he couldn't find a new partner. All Money is Legal (K-Murda & K-Pusha) vs. The SAT (Jose & Joel Maximo): AMIL is one of the better tag teams on the indy scene today. The match was excellent with lots of wrestling and high spots. Unlike the three previous matches, the winner of this one was not as predictable. Most would have thought the PWU Tag Team Champions, the SAT, would win the match. However, All Money is Legal advanced to the next round in the best match on the show thus far. (Non Tournament) PWU Women's Champion Mercedes Martinez vs. Detox: I am not a fan of mixed matches. I see no reason for them. They completely destroy any myth or any reality that wrestling should have. Mercedes is one of the best women on the indy scene and to be used in a match like this only tells me that the bookers have no clue. Long story short, Mercedes won by DQ when Detox knocked her out with a can of spray paint. (Non Tournament) PWU Hardcore Champion Corporal Robinson issues an open challenge: Corporal Robinson issued an open challenge because his scheduled opponent, Afa Jr., had signed a contract with the WWE. Aramis came out to the ring and quickly got knocked out by the Corporal. K.C. Blade then came out and was knocked out by the Hardcore Champion. Pete Hunter came out and quickly submitted to Corporal Robinson. Ridiculously unnecessary stuff. Luckilly, it didn't last long. Semi Final The Rotweillers (Homicide & Ricky Reyes) vs. Jay Briscoe & Joker: Jay Briscoe came out first and introduced Joker as his partner for the remainder of the tournament. Joker ended up turning on Briscoe and helping the Rotweillers advance to the Finals. All Money Is Legal (K-Murda & K-Pusha) vs. The Backseat Boyz (Trent Acid & Johnny Kashmere): The Backseats did a bunch of "fruity flips" but a surprise roll-up by All Money Is Legal allowed them to advance to the finals. (Non Tournament) PWU World Heavyweight Champion Devon Moore vs. Azriael: The two men fought up the ramp and soon appeared in the balcony where Devon was tied at the wrists and thrown over the side, hanging by his arms. Azriael the ran back to the ring and won by Countout. Before the finals of the Pitbull/Public Enemy Tag Team Tournament, Tod Gordon and Gary Wolfe carried the trophy to the ring and took a seat at ringside. Finals The Rotweillers (Homicide & Ricky Reyes w/Joker) vs. All Money Is Legal (K-Murda & K-Pusha): AMIL had a hell of a road to the finals, with great matches against the SAT and The Backseats. Meanwhile, the Rotweillers had two fairly easy victories. Luckilly, the bookers didn't follow suit with the previous matches. Joker started to interfere in the match sot he other teams came down and chased him to the back. Lots of tributes to PE and the Pitbulls (Rotweillers using a super bomb and AMIL using a Drive by). The Rotweillers dominated the match but AMIL was able to score the upset to capture the Pitbull/Public Enemy Memorial Cup in the best bout of the show. Tod Gordon and Gary Wolfe presented the Pitbull/Public Enemy Memorial Cup trophy to All Money is Legal. Public Enemy's theme music played as a celebrated in memory of the late great "Pitbull" Anthony Durante, Ted "Rocco Rock" Petty, and Mike "Johnny Grunge" Durham took place. Everybody agreed that all three were looking down on the New Alhambra Arena! The show ended with the following announcement: "The Juggalos are coming!" Ugh. This is a 2 Disc DVD and includes a 10 minute "post game show" which includes an interview with AMIL. The DVD is worth the watch for the AMIL matches alone (which make up for any of the less than stellar matches on the show). Overall, a very enjoyable DVD, although I can't help but wonder what Pitbull Gary thinks of a "PE/Pitbull Memorial" when he's still alive!
