DVD Review: ROH – Death Before Dishonor 4 - Philadelphia, PA 7/15/06

Available at ROHWrestling.com

After a six month inter-promotional feud, it has all come down to this... ROH vs CZW in the infamous Cage of Death!!

Delirious kicked off the DVD by facing Seth Delay. Pretty much a squash match with Delirious taking the win.

Prince Nana was in the ring next as he was prepares to introduce the newest member of his Embassy. Daizee Haze escorted someone, covered with a sheet, down to the ring. She unveiled him to reveal Salvatore Rinauro! Well, it seems Sal is now the official stepping stool (a position once held by the lovely Jade Chung) for Jimmy Rave. Jimmy Rave and Sal Rinauro took on Colt Cabana and Jay Lethal. The match began with the usual showering the ring with toilet paper for the Embassy. For the majority of the match, Cabana and Lethal beat down Rinauro until Rave snuck in and picked up the quick pinfall.

Roderick Strong was now going to have his opportunity at Nigel McGuinness' Pure Championship. What a great match. McGuinness quickly used up his three rope breaks. The crowd was very vocal and seemed to love the match. Nigel, with not much left to do decided to cause a double countout. He DDT'd Strong on the floor at ringside. Strong began to get up at the 17 count, crawling toward the ring. Nigle grabbed Strong's leg and pulled it, giving him enough force to slide into the ring, while pulling Strong away at the same time. Nigel retains the title via countout.

Jim Cornette entered the ring and showed how he still has it. Cornette was phenomenal at riling up the CZW fans while getting the ROH fans to eat out of the palm of his hand. Jim Cornette said that Homicide had three wishes if they wanted him in the Cage of Death (which we saw in a taped interview earlier on the DVD). Cornette refused to give Homicide his wishes. Bryan Danielson came out and said he would be the 5th member of Team ROH in the Cage of Death and didn't want any favors or wishes in return. Cornette accepted.

Irish Airborne were defeated by the Briscoe Brothers.

Davey Richards (ECWA SUper 8 Winner for 2006) faced off against AJ Styles in the next match. Another phenomenal (no pun intended) match. AJ won the match with the Styles Clash but not after a hell of a match that is a must see.

American Dragon retained the ROH World title over Sonjay Dutt when the referee stopped the match after a series of elbows to Dutt's neck, head, chest and face.

During intermission, Gary Michael Cappetta interviewed Nigel McGuinness.

The Cage of Death was up next. The ring was completely surrounded by the cage, with room between the ring and the cage (where there were weapons galore). JJ Dillon was introduced and made the call for the coin flip, which gave ROH the advantage.

Without giving away too much detail... Team ROH consisted of Samoa Joe, B.J. Whitmer, American Dragon, Adam Pearce, and Ace Steel while Team CZW included Claudio Castagnoli, Chris Hero, Spyder Nate Webb, Necro Butcher and a mystery partner. Weapons included barbed wire wrapped tables, ladders, trash cans, barbed wire wrapped bats, and almost anything else you can imagine. Team ROH dominated the first part of the match until Bryan Danielson turned on them, taking out Samoa Joe. This gave CZW the upper hand. CZW's mystery partner turned out to be Eddie Kingston. While Homicide ended up entering the melee to help Team ROH.

While the match itself was definately something to see and impossible to describe, it was the aftermath that I enjoyed the most.

Post match: Jim Cornette came out and thanked everybody. He then granted Homicide his 3 wishes. Wish 1 - an ROH match with Steve Corino. Granted. Wish 2 - an ROH World Title shot. Granted. Wish 3 - Bring back Low Ki. Not Granted. Cornette tried to explain how that was not a wish for Homicide but for Low Ki. Homicide spit in Cornette's face. That was a mistake. As Adam Pearce attacked Homicide, JJ Dillon locked the cage door. JJ and Adam handcuffed Homicide to the top turnbuckle where Cornette whipped him with his belt. What an awesome turn of events. It was so great to see both JJ and Jim back doing the heelish things that made them the legends they are.

Finally, Cornette, Pearce, and JJ left the ring and headed to the back. The ROH ring crew and security ran in to help Homicide.
