New England Championship Wrestling - Superslam - Women's
Championship Tournament DVD Review

On June 5, 2005, New England Championship Wrestling crowned it's first women's champion in a one night, eight woman tournament, that took place at the Good Time Emporium in Somerville, MA. This DVD features the tournament, from the quarter finals to the finals plus it has bonus footage of the pre show press conference.
The menu options on the DVD allow you to either "Play All" or jump to a specific match.
The DVD begins with a video montage to "You Want" by Hurricane Eye.
We are shown press conference coverage where Sheldon Goldberg is introducing each of the participants. Each lady says some words to the fans in attendance.
The women, in the order that they were introduced, were:
Della Morte (alternate)
Mercedes Martinez
Violet Flame
Cindy Rogers (who is just hilarious telling Della Morte that "it
looks as if there are two of you." Then tells Luscious Lily, "I
wouldn't talk cuz there seems to be one and a half of you!")
Luscious Lily
Nikki Roxx
Jade
Riptide (who's name on the screen was spelled Riptid)
Alere Little Feather (who declared, "I'm proud to be here with 7 other athletes. Well, six plus Lily."
Onto the matches... (I won't get into play by play for each match as you can buy the DVD to see how good each bout is)
The opening bout saw Violet Flame defeat Jade with a modified Vaderbomb into and elbow. A couple of scary botched moves in the beginning, however the match did pick up and improve.
Nikki Roxx defeated Cindy Rogers in an excellent match. During the match, someone came to ringside hiding behind a potted tree. Personally, I'm more into the wrestling than the outside antics that take away from the match. Cindy was of course distracted and Nikki Roxx pinned her with a Victory Roll.
Riptide defeated Luscious Lily with the Skinner inverted DDT. Another excellent match by both women.
Mercedes Martinez defeated Alere Little Feather after a spinning neckbreaker off the top rope. At one point during the match, Mercedes hit the most vicious brianbuster I have EVER seen. The fact that Alere even moved after that amazed me. After the brainbuster, Mercedes hog-tied Alere and took a rest in the front row. Alere made a slight comeback but when she climbed to the top rope, Mercedes knocked her down to a sitting position on the top and hit the finisher.
The Semi Finals were up next.
Nikki Roxx defeated Violet Flame. Yet another excellent match which showcased both women's abilities. The match started with each woman getting a fast series of two counts and pinning combinations. The mysterious person hiding behind the tree, once again came to ringside. Both women chased the person and beat them up. At no point was the person revealed or was there any explanation as to who it was. As usual, I am left wondering, what exactly was the point? Violet set up Nikki for the Vaderbomb elbow but Nikki grabbed her, as she climbed the ropes, and powerbombed her for the pinfall.
Mercedes Martinez defeated Riptide with a beautiful Fisherman Buster. Della Morte came out during the match and distracted Riptide which made the victory a little easier for Martinez.
The finals saw Mercedes Martinez face off against Nikki Roxx. The entire match was great, with the women getting in all their signature moves and some great chain wrestling. Nikki hit a huracanrana for the pin but Della Morte came out and distracted Roxx. Mercedes then simply hit a front face slam on Nikki for the pin. A great WRESTLING match, ruined with a lame finish. (The finishing move alone should not have been a finisher.)
Post bout: Mercedes Martinez and Della Morte attack Roxx until Violet Flame makes the save.
Overall the DVD was a great showcase of the ability of the eight ladies involved. The wrestling, for the most part, was strong (which was no surprise given the caliber of talent). The strange outside the ring angles were weak and really unnecessary (but then again, I'm not booking).
If you want to see some great women's wrestling from some of the best on the indy scene today, this DVD is for you!
