Top 50 Women

The Wrestling Clothesline is proud to present the Third Annual Wrestling Clothesline's Top 50 Independent Women Wrestlers.

In 2003, The Wrestling Clothesline, being an avid supporter of women indy wrestling, decided to take the idea of ranking wrestlers in a slightly different direction. Since Vince McMahon won't take women wrestling seriously and TNA won't even give it a second thought, someone has to give credit to those women who are working week in and week out, in those high school gyms and broken down Elk's Lodges, for barely enough money to pay for gas an tolls.

Hell, everyone does a Top (insert number here) for the guys in wrestling. So, here at WrestlingClothesline.com feel the need to give all those women out there on the indy scene the recognition they deserve.

The 2003 Wrestling Clothesline Top 50 Independent Women Wrestlers was such a unique concept that Bill Apter's Total Wrestling Magazine featured the list (both on the cover and with a multiple page spread!!)

Due to the overwhelming success of the 2003 Top 50, we decided to continue it in 2004. Now, in 2005, we are doing it once again!

Throughout October, visitors to the Wrestling Clothesline were encouraged to send in and post their nominations for women they felt deserved to be on this year's list of the Top 50 Independent Women Wrestlers.

From all the women who have been nominated, the Wrestling Clothesline Panel narrowed the list down to those we feel are the Top 50 Independent Women Wrestlers. The panel consisted of fans as well as workers and promoters in the wrestling business. All panel members submitted their Top 50 rankings which were then averaged together to finalize the list.

Narrowing down the list to 50 is not an easy task. We're only human. There are many women we have not seen in action live, and without you letting us know about them, it would be impossible to take them into consideration.

When making our final decisions we used the following guidelines:

  • The list is a reflection of who we feel are the 50 best women wrestlers on the indy scene at the present time.
  • The list is reflective, but not limited too, a wrestlers previous 12 month body of work.
  • The women in the list should be active WRESTLERS and should wrestle on a regular basis. Women who primarily manage or valet will not be included. Women who were under a contract of any kind with the WWE/OVW are not included.
  • Wrestlers we have seen work will get a higher rank than those who we have not seen.
  • Injuries will be factored into the decision making process. Poor booking will not.

The final rankings are just our opinions and are being done to help generate discussion and bring attention to women's wrestling.

Updated Nov. 7- 3pm

First off let me thank everyone that has emailed or posted with their comments on the Top 50 Rankings. The majority of emails that I have received (from fans and wrestlers alike) have been positive. There have been some people who disagree with some of the rankings and that is to be expected. Everyone has an opinion and chances are not everyone is going to find their favorite female at a spot that they seem worthy.

With that in mind let me reiterate the guidelines that are posted with the rankings. Hopefully, this will help cover some of the questions that have been brought up.

So, if your favorite girl primarily managed or was a valet over the past 12 months, chances are she has a low ranking (if ranked at all). If your favorite was under contract with the WWE (AKA Alexis Laree) she is not ranked. If your favorite was primarily working outside of wrestling or was recuperating from some sort of plastic surgery, chances are she was not ranked.

Remember that the entire purpose behind this list is to help generate discussion and bring attention to women's wrestling.

Again, thanks to all who have emailed. Constructive criticism and intellectual conversation is always welcome. (Unintelligible emails are welcome as well as we all need some laughs).

Remember you can also feel free to use our forum to comment on this year's list!
