Rusty
Brooks
During
the 1980's, you couldn't turn on a WWF television show without seeing
this man in action. While his win loss record was a bit one sided, you
could not watch a full 60 minute show without seeing him in a match. This
man was Rusty Brooks. Mr. Brooks was kind enough to answer our 10 Questions
for us and for you!!
1. Why
did you decide to become a professional wrestler?
I grew up a wrestling fan, and after playing semi-pro football, I decided
to give it a shot.
2. How did you get your start? Who trained you?
I was trained originally by a gentleman named Jim Isler in Hollywood,
Fl., a guy who was a worker in the Carolina's in the 50's. Then I trained
with Boris 'The Great' Malenko, who was very influential in my career.
Later Malenko and I ran a wrestling school in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl,.
3. When was your first pro match? Who was it against? For what promotion?
My first pro match was against a fellow named Steve Brody, for Buddy Gilbert's
World Wrestling Association in October of 1981 in the Sunrise Musical
Theatre in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.
4. You were on WWF tv for many years and fought many of the top WWF
stars of that day. Which wrestlers did you enjoy getting in the ring with?
Were there any you didn't like working with or against?
I enjoyed working against Ricky Steamboat and the late great Junkyard
Dog. Actually I didn't really have anyone I didn't mind working, because
90% of the boy's where outstanding workers and good guy's also.
If really pressed I guess, Ivan Putski was a pain in the ass to work,
but over all it was a great experience.
5. What do you think was your hilight or your most memorable moment
form your WWF days?
I would imagine working Hulk Hogan on WWF Superstar's television. He was
the top money maker and most over performer of his time.
6. What other promotions have you worked for? Which ones did you like
the most (and or least)?
I worked for the NWA, AWA, World Class (Texas), ICW and countless other
Independent promotions.. ICW was a lot fun, I enjoyed a 2 year run with
the Florida based Global Wrestling Alliance, Gordon Solie's Florida Championship
Wrestling was a great experience (although the money sucked) because I
grew up in Florida and alway's watched the show growing up.. Probably
the two worst companies I ever worked for would be two Florida Independents...
Bill Brown's Sunshine Wrestling (now a cheap imitation of Florida Championship
Wrestling) really sucked because Brown was a born liar, who wouldn't know
the truth if it bit him in the ass.
7. When you're not wrestling, what do you like to do?
I coach youth league football, enjoy teaching pro wrestling.
8. What have you been up to since the WWF? Where are you wrestling?
Just keeping busy wrestling for the Independents and running a school
in Hollywood, Fl.
9. How can fans and/or promoters get in touch with you if they would
like to?
I can be reached at 'RustyIPWA@aol.com'
10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully still alive and kicking
