Stop the Whining and Complaining!
By Brett Schwan

The following is completely non wrestling related. I just wanted to vent and try and convey a simple, yet poignant point.

It is 8:00 am Friday. I just logged on for the first time since the power went out on Thursday at 4:10 pm. My two mailboxes are filled with the usual spam mail and chain letters. In addition, many emails from people complaining about how they were out of power for a few hours yesterday fill my mailbox. Then I start receiving numerous IMs, all of which are stating the same thing, how horrible it was to be without power. Keep in mind, many of the people who are doing this complaining had their power back by 11pm last night.

Was the power outage an inconvenience? Yes. Was it the end of the world? No. However, from listening to the tirades of all these people, you would have thought it was.

What the hell would you people have done in the blackout of the 70's when there were a LOT less conveniences than we have today? Hell, you wouldn't have made it through the one in the 60's, that's for sure (not that I was alive then). So you had to go a few hours without air conditioning. How did you survive? No cell phone? Oh My God!! What did you do?? No computer or internet access!! Damn those terrorists!!!

That's right, what every one of you people who are complaining and whining about a little loss of power forget is this could have been a HELL of a lot worse.

Was it an act of terrorism? All signs and statements say no. Could it have been? Yes. Then what would you have done? How much damage could have been done if we were rendered completely defenseless and they decided to take action?

Did you have to live for a few hours without air conditioning, lights, a cell phone, a television, a computer? Yes. Were you one of the thousands who didn't make it home from work and were forced to sleep in Times Square or Central Park? No. (and amazingly enough, most of those people who were forced to sleep outdoors last night, aren't complaining half as much as some of you who were safe at home.)

I didn't get my power back until 4am Friday. Did I lose some food in the refrigerator and freezer? Yep. Did I sweat last night in my 80 plus degree apartment? Yep. Did my only candle burn out by 10pm? Yep. Did I sit here in misery and complain to any person I could find. Did I call anyone who still had a land line to complain to them? (and how many of you wish you still had a nice old phone you just plug into the jack and Voila!) No.

I really can not comprehend how so many people can take a minor inconvenience and act as if it was the worst thing they have ever gone through. Have you all forgotten what happened on Sept 11th, 2001? Hell, the world changed and nearly everyone's attitude did as well. To look at last night's inconvenience as anything more than just that, and inconvenience, says tons about you as a person. It saddens me that you can not look at what happened and see all the positives. All you can see are the negatives. How did you live 20 years ago without a cell phone and such easy computer access? What would you have done in the days prior to televisions and air conditioning? You all disappoint me

Well, while you were sitting and complaining to whomever would listen.. We were outside enjoying a full moon, a meteor shower, and the only chance to view Mars in quite some time. In addition, we were spending quality time with loved ones, family, and friends. No distractions from the fast paced world we have grown accustomed to and rely so heavily on. While you were trying to see if the remote was working yet, we were outside just reminiscing, talking, laughing, and having a good time.

Please don't think I'm trying to take a holier than though attitude. I apologize if it comes across that way. I'm just trying to point out how many people were able to make the best out last night while others chose to just make themselves more miserable.

For everyone who survived last night (and remarkably, there have been no reports of any major tragedies stemming from this blackout) congratulations. I hope you were able to make the best of the evening. For those of you who weren't able to, I hope you can look back at it and see how things could have been a HELL of a lot worse.

Thanks for letting me vent. I just needed to.

On a wrestling related note. Don't forget NYWC will be in Deer Park on Saturday night!
2 of the "Crew" will be in PA for the weekend for WXW shows. If you're there, drop by and say hi!

If you want to email me, comment, complain, etc... feel free.
