Angel
(aka Kane D)
1. What
made you decide to get into professional wrestling?
Back in 86 I was watching Bill Watts & UWF and saw guys like Eddie
Gilbert (RIP), Ivan & Nikita Koloff, The Fabulous Freebirds, Terry
Taylor, Steve Williams, Ted Dibiase, Hacksaw Duggan and enjoyed their
hardcore style unlike the 86 WWF Rock-N-Wrestling era. I got hooked and
that's when I decided I wanted to be a wrestler.
2. Who trained
you? Where was your first match and who was it against?
I trained at a lot of schools. I went to Johnny Rodz back in 92 with my
then NC-17 partner Italian Ice (JAPW owner Fat Frank Iadevia). We also
trained at Gino Caruso's school and after we split I reformed NC-17 with
my real life brother Chino Martinez and we trained at Iron Mike Sharpe's
school in Asbury Park.
My first match was in NYC for Pete McKay's IPWA vs. Ken Sweeney (USA Pro
Wrestling)
3. What promotions
have you worked for?
I've worked for several accomplished promotions over the years like:
Jersey All-Pro Wrestling (JAPW), National Wrestling Alliance New York
(NWA-NY), Phoenix Championship Wrestling (PXCW), World Wide Wrestling
Alliance (WWWA), Stars & Stripes Championship Wrestling (SSCW), Jersey
Championship Wrestling (JCW), Independent Professional Wrestling Alliance
(IPWA), New Jack City Wrestling (NJCW), East Coast Professional Wrestling
(ECPW), Bloody Rage American Wrestling League (BRAWL), American Wrestling
Council/NWA 2000 (AWC-NWA 2000), American Championship Wrestling Alliance
(ACWA), Soul City Wrestling (SCW), Richmond Championship Wrestling (RCW),
Long Island Wrestling Federation (LIWF), Empire Wrestling Alliance (EWA),
World Wrestling Coalition (WWC), Tri County Wrestling (TCW), Northern
States Wrestling Alliance (NSWA), Action Packed Wrestling Alliance (APWA),
World Wrestling Organization (WWO), All Star Wrestling Association (ASWA),
Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW)
4. Of all the promotions
you have worked for, which ones stand out as being your favorite (and
least favorite)? Why?
I enjoyed all the feds I worked for. I may have not liked some of the
workers in a couple of feds I worked for but I have a lot of good memories
in most of them.
5. Who are some
of your favorite wrestlers to work with or against? Are there any you
dread stepping in the ring with?
I enjoyed working King Kong Bundy on a SSCW show. I was nervous as hell
to be working him. But that match told me that I was good enough to hang
with someone of his level and we had a great match. The Lost Boys, Dr.
Hurtz, Magic, Jason Knight, New Jack, Tommy Dreamer, The Soul Brothers,
The Christopher St. Connection, Ace Darling, Crowbar, Charlie & Russ
(RIP) Haas were guys I liked working against also.
I dread stepping into the ring with guys that think they're doing me a
favor by being in the ring with me. I've been doing this for 9 years,
I traveled with Chino and Fat Frank in snowstorms for $10 each. I've more
than paid my dues. I didn't come out of wrestling school and get paid
$100 by my promoter/friend, like some guys did.
6. What has been
the most memorable moment of your career thus far?
Watching my younger brother Chino prove people wrong, that said he's too
small & he can't hang with the big boys & Watching him go toe
to toe with some of the best on the indy scene like: Nova, Reckless Youth,
The Pitbulls, Chris Candido, The Lost Boys, Magic, Crowbar, Ace Darling,
Pablo Marquez, Low Ki, Harley Lewis, Rockin Rebel, etc. Plus he holds
victories over the majority of the guys I've mentioned.
7. What wrestlers
do you enjoy watching the most?
Indy guys. I've always enjoyed watching guys like Reckless Youth, Nova,
Rik Ratchet, Dr. Hurtz, Magic, Lupus, Harley Lewis, The Soul Brothers,
The Lost Boys, Donnie Bon Jovi.
In WWF/WCW/ECW, I liked the styles of Raven, Public Enemy, PG-13, The
Filthy Animals, Nation of Domination, Scott Hall and Chris Benoit.
8. What is your
favorite thing about being a pro wrestler? What is your least favorite
thing?
My favorite thing is meeting new wrestlers and the traveling.
My least favorite things is promoter's acting like cheerleaders and male
ring rats for certain talent and forgetting about the other workers.
9. What do you
think of the current state of pro wrestling? Where do you see wrestling
headed in the next year?
I feel the indies have no originality, it's like everyone wants to be
a gangster. Put on a Jersey, baggy pants, camos and say I'm a thug, when
Fat Frank and I started this gangsta thing back in 92 with NC-17/Bad Attitude.
The only other gangsta team out was PG-13. Now it's ridiculous, there's
like 50 million gangstas. It's like the music industry with N*Sync, Backstreet
Boys, O-Town, BBMak, B2K and so on ,they're all the originals forgetting
about the Jackson 5, The Osmonds, New Kids on the Block and New Edition.
The guys that made it possible for these current boy bands to exist today.
Respect the past.
10. Where do you
see yourself in 5 years?
Owning my own fed. It would be ran professionally, my group won't be acting
like male ring rat/cheerleaders or trying to be the next ECW. It (the
company) would be the first whatever I decide to call it. It would be
hard-hitting, old-school wrestling with good wrestlers, great build-ups
and even better storylines. But that's not until a few years. Right now
I'm going to FL in May. I'll be recording a few Rap singles with Madyoshi
Records. Who knows, in 5 years I might win a Grammy (Yeah Right!)
