NYWC

The NYWC returned to the Deer Park Community Center on Saturday night, September 27th with their latest edition of Rampage. The show, with a scheduled 7:30 belltime began at 7:45.

Your referees for the evening: Chris Jackson and Andre

Luminaries in attendance: None unless you count Ronald Beider and Doug (last name not known).

The show opened with Tyler Payne coming to the ring, accompanied by Crusher Doogan and Maison Raige. Tyler called out Dickie Rodz. Rodz came through the curtain only to unveil revealing Ru Star. Tyler and "Dickie" exchanged some words until Veronic Payne came out. Veronica is Tyler's sister and happens to be "seeing" Dickie Rodz. Veronica slaps Ru and then is shoved to the mat by her brother, Tyler. Dickie enters the ring from behind, hits Doogan with a chair and clears the ring. I stopped watching WWE, among other reasons, because they open every show with a 20 minute promo. NYWC seems to be taking a cue from them, except this one only lasted 16 minutes.

The first actual match of the night was Ken Scampi w/ Tara Charisma vs. Damian Dragon with Foxxy Dreams. Why this match is your opener is beyond me. Scampi hit a beautiful suicide plancha, over the top rope, onto Damian at ringside. The two men battled back and forth until Tara decided to enter the ring with a chair. Foxxy soon followed with her own chair. As the two women began to "catfight", Damian and Scampi set up the chairs and sat down for the best seat in the house. The two women fought to the floor. Damian and Scampi toasted with some water before continuing their match. Meanwhile, at ringside, Tara (who assumingly was a face since she was high fiving people at ringside) attacked Foxxy from behind. Faces now do sneak attacks!? Damian went for a sliced bread number 2 but Scampi countered it and hit a frog splash for the pin. Very good match by all involved. The crowd wanted the catfight and got it. Damian and Scampi played it up beautifully and put on an exceptional match in the process.

The next bout saw Guillotine LeGrande defeat Mike Tobin by submission. Anyone who has ever read any of my columns knows my feelings on both these men. They put on a very solid match with LeGrande working on the arm (leading up to the submission) and Tobin fighting back only to be taken down by a cheap shot or hair pull. My only complaint is that Tobin seemed to forget that his arm was being worked on as he no sold it a bit during the match. Very good match overall however.

Silva Man w/ his trusted sidekick Captain Hoopla defeated Armand Demuerto in a pure comedy match. Armand came out dressed as a pirate. The match included a duel. Silva Man was victorious. Purely a comedy match. After the match, Damian and Foxxy entered the ring and told Armand that he was not goth. Foxxy, who's matching purple hair and outift was stunning, sat in the ring vehemently agreeing with everything Damian was saying.

Next up was the monthly installment of the promoter having to be involved in an angle. At least this time, they kept him off the mic for the most part. John Curse entered the ring only to have Greg Stengel (promoter) come out and babble about him being the money behind NYWC. I'd have no problem with this angle if Stengel was at all convincing in the role. (Note to Curse: Please don't mess up my hair LOL.) Stengel hired Don Jeremy to take on Curse tonight. Don Jeremy (formerly Tusk) would have been more suitably named "Loch Mess". He was accompanied to the ring by the Hooters Girls. Jeremy used his size to dominate from the start. Curse did get in some offense. Curse climbed to the top rope and hit a cross body only to be caught. Jeremy set him up for what looked like a fall away slam but instead just fell backwards and got pinned. Curse was your shocked winner. Jeremy then said he was only here for the girls and he, Curse, and the Hooter Girls danced in the ring. The ending would have made more sense if Jeremy gave a better reason for screwing over Stengel BUT watching Curse dance made up for it.

The NYWC Tag Team Title match was up next. No Highspots Needed (Tyler Payne and Ru Star) w/ Crusher Doogan (who must have sold a hell of a lot of tickets as this was his second of six appearances tonight) defeated Mikey Whipwreck and Wayne. I've said this a thousand times before... I paid $25 to watch Mikey Whipwreck's retirement match a few years ago, can I have my refund yet? Your basic Mikey and Wayne comedy match with a few nice spots thrown in. The finish saw Maison Raige (who also must have sold a LOT of tickets) chokeslam Wayne and Mikey (on a guardrail in the ring) while the ref was distracted. No Highspots Needed will be one of the best tag teams out there in a few months. Glad they had some opportunity to shine here (although not enough for my liking).

After a 15 minute intermission we were treated (cough) to the Prince's Palace. Piper had his Pit. Adonis had his Flower Shop. Hell, Missy Hyatt had her short lived (and never seen) Missy's Manor. The difference, all three of them had mic skills. Prince Charles spent 15 minutes basically setting up the Tony Burma v Tyler Payne match for later in the evening by interviewing Burma and, guess who?? Crusher Doogan. Complete waste of time to set up an already established match. Should have done this DURING the intermission to save the crowd from having to see it.

The next match was announced as an invitational battle royal for the NYWC Interstate Title. However, the rules were not that of a battle royal. Pinfalls counted. Countouts didn't. The winner was the last person holding the title when the 10 minute time limit expired. Almost reminiscent of the Hardcore Title match the WWE had a few years back. I said ALMOST. In this match, it didn't matter who you pinned. As soon as you pinned someone you were declared the new champion. WHAT? Shouldn't you AT LEAST have the most recent champion get pinned to lose the belt? Not to the booker, Vince called, he wants to hire you.

Contestants in this "match" were Nuke, Matt Hype, Spyder, Iceberg, Ken Scampi, Lamar Braxton Porter, Joey Braggiole, and Southern Vinny Stylin'. With two minutes left in the match, Maison Raige comes in and starts to destroy. He press slammed Porter who fell hard to the mat. Porter was technically pinning Braggiole when Ru Star entered and put his foot on Porter for the pin. Ru Star. Meanwhile, Porter is still out cold but pinning Braggiole. So, why is no one making the count? How is it there is an obvious pin in the middle of the ring but for the next minute, Ru Star just sits and watches the time tick by? The bell rings and your winne and new NYWC Interstate Champion is Ru Star.

Dickie Rodz w/ Veronica Payne defeated Rob Eckos with a famouser after Veronica hit Eckos with a horrible reverse stunner. Not a bad match until the finish. Rodz, minus the horrible gay gimmick, is a decent worker and Eckos has established himself as one of the better workers on the indy scene.

The NYWC Heavyweight Title Match was next. Tyler Payne, still with Crusher Doogan, defeated Tony Burma (with Serena). Highlight of the match (for Ron) was Tyler doing the Garvin Stomp on Tony. Tyler kept going to chain wrestling throughout the match. A great wrestling match by both men. Doogan threw a chain to Tyler, who knocked out Tony BUT Tyler put the chain in Tony's hand and put him on top for the cover. The ref counted 3, declared the new champion, and raised Tony's hand. Oops! Tony has a chain. Reverse the decision. Your winner, by DQ, and still NYWC Heavyweight Champion... Tyler Payne.

The main event of the evening was a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match for the NYWC Lighthevayweight Title. Johnny Ova was defending the title against Dan Barry and Grim Reefer. The title was suspended from the very high ceiling. The match was simply amazing. To even try and do any kind of play by play would not do it justice. Dan Darry hit the Irsih Car Bomb off the ladder to a phenomenal response. Barry also took a sick bump off the ladder, through a table at ringside. Reefer and Ova also used the ladder, propped on the top rope in a corner, for some amazing spots. With Barry through a table outside and Ova nearly out cold in the corner, Reefer climbed the ladder and grabbed the belt. The ref, who was outside checking on Barry, never saw it. Ova decked Reefer and grabbed the belt in time for the ref to see and declare Ova the champion. Phenomenal match in which words can not describe. All three men earned a great deal of respect.

After the match, No Highspots Needed with Raige and Doogan came out to invite Ova to join their group. He agreed. (Ova = No Highspots? Anyone else see a problem here?)

Overall, the crowd was into the whole show. It doesn't really matter what I think about it as long as the majority of fans leave happy and wanting more. From the looks of things, most of the fans here tonight left happy. Would I personally change some of tonight's angles? Yes. I'd say that about almost any show I ever go to. However, what do I know?.. I'm just a fan. It's still the best thing going for the $10 ticket price. If it wasn't consistently entertaining, I wouldn't have made it one of my three regular stops (along with ECWA and an occassional WXW show).

Post match dinner at Ruby Tuesday with Doug, Damian Dragon and Foxxy Dreams. For more on that check out Foxxy's journal by clicking here as I'm sure she'll mention it in her next update. Hell, while your at it, check out the new Disturbed Dreams Website.
